Green Regenerating Phonies

Just a quick question here.

The Monster Manual has plenty of mythological creatures, and has defined them for the D&D game.

Question being, where did they get the image of the troll? The green, sinewy thingy isn't what Tolkien was talking about, so what source was it taken from?

Just curious...

"While trolls can be found throughout folklore, and are well-known to readers of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, the D&D troll comes from Three Hearts and Three Lions, by Poul Anderson, including the long nose and rubbery skin, ability to regenerate, and weakness to fire."
