In case you've never heard of it, HackMaster was originally a joke game from Knights of the Dinner Table that got published, and was basically AD&D on steroids. The current edition is no longer a joke, although it still has a light tone with some good old-fashioned gygaxian... I mean jacksonian rants.
HackMaster has a steep early learning curve, but after the early difficulties it flows really well. The game is noteworthy for its detailed character creation, awesome combat, and high quality books.
