• The VOIDRUNNER'S CODEX is coming! Explore new worlds, fight oppressive empires, fend off fearsome aliens, and wield deadly psionics with this comprehensive boxed set expansion for 5E and A5E!

Help make me invincible.

Make Con a dump stat and persue lichdom or, if the DM will allow it, the green star adept prestige class.

If specialist wizards get every spell from their chosen school, I hope someone is playing a conjurer: healing and summon monster and teleportation!

Check Unearthed Arcana to see what benifits you can gain as an abjurer or a conjurer for giving up the familiar, the bonus feats, or the specialist's bonus spells.

make your own plane, make it effectively impossible to enter, astral project yourself to the prime, enjoy adventuring without being able to die ;)

Becoming a ghost with enough ability to always make the 'do I come back' check could work as well..lol

Not possible. There is no such thing as an invincible character.
My spellcasting characters always cast immunity to damage, harm, misfortune, or untoward circumstances before every encounter. It lasts 24 hours, prevents anything bad* from happening to the caster, and doesn't use up a spell slot, prepared spell, material components, or an action.

[sblock]*unless you count the 120% increase in the liklihood of being struck by blue lighting.[/sblock]

Except Elminster.

interwyrm, name your character Elminster. Write the words "plot device" on your character sheet, and no DM will be able to touch you.

And now seriously...

You have to decide what you want to be invincible from. There's no way to defend against every eventuality, but you can become darned good at taking down (or at least neutralizing) a fair swath of enemies.

My Sorc/Iot7FV was a pretty darned good anti-mage. A Ring of Counterspells protected me from targetted Dispel Magics. Contingent Protection from Evil protected me from most Enchantment spells. Fly, Swift kept me away from the melee types. And Wardings kept the pesky arrows at bay.

True, I'd run out of stuff eventually, but that would keep me very safe for about two encounters a day. And I'd be fairly free to dish out hurt while I was at it.

Funny thing was, I wasn't so hot at killing the enemy melee types because most of my spells were of the protective variety. Sure, they'd be inconvienienced by Walls of Ice, but they'd still have to be killed later. So I realized that despite my design, I needed those meat shields because I couldn't take care of enemy thugs very easily.

The point being, with your wizard, try make the party invincible even if only for a short while. Keep the enemy spellcasters at bay, divide the enemy footsoldiers, and allow your team to do what it does best: the actual killing. Be a part of that team, and enjoy the role of keeping their buns out of the oven most of the time.

And while you're at it, try to always make it seem like one of your other party members is a more dangerous target than you. ;)

Thanks Felix, that's getting closer to what I was looking for. I'm not interested in being able to decimate armies quickly... just keeping the party, and especially myself, alive. One thing I'm worried about though is being ambushed while resting. Any suggestions on how to protect against that?

Rest inside a Rope Trick spell, or a Mord's Mansion.

Can those be dispelled? They can be detected by see invisible, right? In which case, could you cast nondetection on them before resting?

There's also Leo's hidden lodge at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20020920a

If your characters need to create a camouflaged shelter in a hurry, Leomund's hidden lodge is a great resource to have at hand.

Leomund's Hidden Lodge*
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S, M, F
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets: 20-ft. square structure
Duration: 2 hours/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell is similar to Leomund's Secure Shelter, except that the conjured structure is perfectly camouflaged to blend in with whatever terrain or surroundings are appropriate. It may appear as a house-sized boulder in mountainous or rocky areas, a sand dune, a deadfall, a small grassy knoll, or even a mighty tree. The spell also conceals all telltale signs of habitation, including any smoke, light, or sound coming from within the lodge. Creatures examining the lodge or studying its immediate vicinity note the presence and extent of the shelter with a successful Wilderness Lore check (DC 30). If the lodge's occupants are seen entering or leaving the lodge, the DC for this check drops to 10.

* This is the third of six spells Rich originally wrote for Player's Option: Spells & Magic and has updated for the new edition of the D&D game.

Staying Alive.

Wings of Flying and Mobile Spellcasting work very well together. Throw on an Aerial Alacrity for fun.

Contingency - Improved Blink or Contingency - Duelward. Quicken Duelward if you have the slot.

Being able to counter something horrible is great. If you are in FR, Improved Counterspell & Reactive Counterspell are pretty slick.

Rings of Freedom of Movement are great for grapple if you don't have Improved Blink or are in a Dim Locked aread.

Try getting a few Gnome Battleshields with the Deathward Enchancement. Put Proof Against Transmutation on your main shield (Hooray no Disintegrate!)

Keep up a Listening Lorecall & See Invisibility up all day using Pearl 2's and Rods of Lesser Extend. Knowing the enemy's location is key.

Good luck!
