When he realizes he is trapped in a burning building, Paine instinctively casts false life[/] [1d4+4=6 hp] to bolster his defences. He calls for help, but is uncertain that he can be heard above the roaring flames in the corridor outside. He smells smoke, and doesn't open the door to his room if he can avoid it. Perhaps a window?

He rushes to the window, and if safe opens it. How far to the ground?

Although the tavern is beginning to fill with smoke, Renestrae and Miri spot a clear path where the tables and bar stools have been upturned. The mastiff is by the bar, searching for his master, and barking incessantly.

----------

Paine opens the shattered window on his first floor room and looks outside. His room is perhaps 10 feet or so from the ground, but there are exterior beams and ledges that might provide handholds - if they don't give way from fire damage.

[OOC: 1d6 damage from a jump from this height. For some reason I thought a DEX/Acrobatics check would half/negate falling damage but I may be remembering a 3rd ed rule; can't seem to find it in the Basic rules? Alternatively a DC 10 STR (Acrobatics) check if you want to climb down]

----------

One of the gnomes driving the cart responds to Orcassm. "A bit shaken from these damned kobolds but we'll survive. Erevan's taken a nasty wound though - and our healer's used up his magic on the townsfolk and Jenna here." he says, gesturing to his female gnome companion.

[OOC: The cart currently contains two male elves who you assume to be Erevan and Rolen, a male and female gnome who must be Jenna, and a small group of frightened looking townsfolk. A female elf and human are looking in through a window of the burning Teeth and Mead inn.]

Some background for Ulfgar and Orcassm:

[sblock]The attack on Greenest came suddenly, with little warning, in the early hours of the morning. The first wave was of hardened warriors flying banners of various mercenary groups. The town militia and guard stood little chance against well disciplined and equipped fighters.

Soon after the initial assault, warriors, scouts and mages from many different races swept across the town; unlike the earlier force, they all wore the same garb - armour and robes fashioned to look like dragon scales and wings, helmets shaped like dragon heads. Occasionally you would catch glimpses of important looking figures in purple who seemed to be directing the attacks.

They concentrated their attack on the richer, noble houses and especially on the large temple of Tymora to the west of the town, near the main keep. You have no idea if the temple still stands.

Then came the kobolds - both on foot and on the wing. They looted indiscriminately, setting fires, killing any survivors they came across. Some of them herded huge reptilian drakes the size of a horse through the streets.

Most of the townsfolk had fled to the main keep during the attack, and it would still appear to be the safest place to be.[/sblock]

It would make sense to assume that you both know each other at least in passing. Ulfgar would presumably make a visit to the Dwarven temple on his occasional trips into Greenest to resupply.

[sblock=ooc]The rules for falling are on p. 65 of the player's basic rules, or p. 183 of the PHB. 1d6/10'. Creature lands prone unless no damage is taken, no rules for saving for half.

If it's dependent on Str and not Dex, it's probably easier just to jump: 3 points damage comes off of the false life.

If Dex (acrobatics is relevant, 1d20+5= 16
[/sblock]

Paine leaps through the window, landing on the ground with a thud. Soot streaks his face, and he feels strangely alive.

'I will be well enough for now, good Gnomes. Make your way to the temple with all speed.' Erevan will then do a quick search of the kobolds looking for anything that might give a clue as to where they came from and why they are here.

Investigation: _: 1D20+1 = [2]+1 = 3
(ooc: Look! I found a kobold!)

Orcassam goes back to the temple and calls the faithfuls : "Come everybody, the road seems clear and there are some brave citizens who can escort you to the keep"

Miri addresses Renestrae: "The main behind the bar, let's go get him together. We have better chances, should something starts to collapse." Miri then sheathe the crossbow, and putting a sleeve in front of her face to avoid breathing the acrid smoke, she cautiously proceeds towards the trapped half-orc "Are you ok sir? Can you move at all?".
