I bought a 13th level PC to 0hp with two CR9 drider vampires of my own creation. The only reason the PC didn't die is because I forgot to bite him when he was down.
I also dropped 3/4 party members with a CR15 Banshee that I also created (based off the original and using DMG guidelines). They had a heart attack when they saw 15d6 Necrotic damage on a hit.
Using the DMG guidelines to build monsters makes high level feel like low level combat in terms of lethality. Using the stock standard ones out of the monsters manual feel a bit weak for some reason (at 13th+ level anyway).
I *do* like the exhaustion on 0hp rule though.
