How do your PCs meet or know each other?

Victoria Rules
1. Major recruitment drive for some famous adventuring company. All prospective recruits are asked to meet at a particular hall in your game's major city. At this meeting the Company representatives divide the applicants up into parties (with, obviously, your PC party being one such) and send them off on test missions....

2. One of the PCs (preferably a Bard or some other loudmouth) has heard rumours about xxx, where xxx is whatever the campaign's first adventure is intended to be, and in every small town or village he/she passes through on the way there he/she makes a big noise about this and scoops up anyone who is interested in joining him/her in finding out if these rumours are true. The rest of the PCs are scattered through these villages...along, perhaps, with some less-desirable types who are also interested in joining...

3. The PCs wake up one fine sunny morning in a clearing outside a cave with no idea how they got there and no memory of anything other than their own name. Seeing their well-worn gear around them brings back memories of class abilities. On talking to each other they all realize the others are familiar somehow but have no idea why. Tracks lead out of the cave to where the PCs are but no tracks come/go anywhere else. (the PCs are restarting a time loop - they're about to start on a multi-adventure series that they've done before but lost all memory of; they failed (again) last time and left. The tracks coming from the cave are their own, left by their higher-level selves when they walked out here last night. If they follow the tracks into the cave they'll hit a gate that'll take them to the first adventure in the series, which in theory builds enough storyline that they'll naturally follow it from there. If they succeed, all is good; if they fail...well, return to start...)
