I pre-ordered the gift set through the FLGS - It was discounted somewhat, but still near 80$, I can only hope that the store is making some of that. I get all my gaming supplies through local stores, because I really appreciate the two gaming stores that I use in the area.
Several EnWorld people mentioned buying the gift set online, and then a 2nd copy of the PHB locally. This seems like a good compromise in affordability/support.
