How would you design the Malazan Campaign Setting?

I am currently reading the Malazan Books of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnight Tides).

While reading I am thinking about how to design the Mechanics for this Setting (not that I have the time to actually do this -just for the fun of it).

How can you design the Races? Some are much mor powerful than the normal human (Jaghut or Tiste Andii for example).

How can you simulate the special Magic system? The Warrens for example.

What Classes should be available?

Some of my ideas:

Races: working with racial levels can equate the power level

Magic: Steal the Black Company Campaign Setting system and change some aspects to fit better (casting times, props etc.)

Classes: The Claw/Talons -There are many Assassine Core Classes out there that I don´t have to design one myself (for example GRR Assassins Handbook).
Sappers - A few twists to the rogue and he should fit.
Cadre Mages, Warlocks etc. - Wizard Class from BCCS

What would you do?
