Huge Soldiers Are Amazing Controllers

Threatening Reach 3 + riders = I am a Controldier. Why are huge soldiers with threatening reach + riders better at controlling than controllers?

Well, the line between defender and 'melee controller' as always been pretty thin. They perform similar roles (as far as control of movement and the battlefield) - defenders just do it up close. A monster who is a super-defender (with threatening reach 3 and riders) is thus very good at the job.

On the other hand, he may not be as good at the other functions of controllers, such as blasting multiple enemies and inflicting various conditions.

Most monsters are only loosely fitted into their roles by the monster designers.

But soldiers, like PC defenders, are controllers - marking is a control effect just rather specific.

Controlers and soldiers are very similar since the last monster update. The difference is the defensebonus controllers lack. So soldiers are just extra AC heavy controllers, more fitting for melee.

The difference between a defender and a controller is pretty much whether they can do their thing at range. And soldier is pretty much the monster name for defender.

Pretty much the difference tends to be that Soldiers/Defenders try to prevent enemies from moving towards anyone else or attacking anyone else. Their powers often don't stop their foes from attacking entirely, they just stop them from attacking anyone but THEM.

Controllers on the other hand have 3 major things that identify them as controllers:

1) They do their thing at range
2) They prevent enemies from attacking ANYONE
3) They effect multiple enemies

A big part of this that should be mentioned is the threatening reach. That quality alone can give a monster a lot of extra attacks in a round (often one per melee PC, especially if the monster can move around a lot or move the PCs around a lot!).

Threatening reach turns almost any monster, soldier or not, into at least an elite-level threat. I've seen a lot of solos that fill up a big chunk of their required actions with threatening reach.
