So, I was in the dining hall with a couple of my players, when one asked a Knowledge question. Wishing the answer immediately, we came up with this system to roll the check...
Bean 20 System:
Gather 20 beans into a napkin. Flick the napkin so some number of beans fall out in front of you. Count them.
The DM then flips a coin, asking the player to call it. If the player calls it right, he gets the higher bean total between the napkin remainder and the table. If he fails, he takes the lesser amount.
The player made the check incidentally, having perfectly met the DC.

On the way out the door, we elaborated on this system to include Smarties- each color represents a different type of damage!

Anyone else have crazed rolling schemes in the absence of computers and dice?
