D&D 5E [IC] Against the Slavelords

Taking a clue that the dock gate might soon be "guarded" the group takes off in that direction. Cedric races off to grab his horse from the 'friendly' half-orc and the group easily out distances the short legged group to the secondary gate. As they approach they see the gate is closed for the night (common in this parts and orc and other night raiders are not too uncommon) but there are only four half-asleep guards stationed here... one one the ground by a reinforced door leaning against a spear, and three up on the ramparts warming their hands near a open brazier.

The guard on the ground seems to wake up as the group approaches, saying "Gate be a closed fer da night, lessen ye all wants to pay the fee..." looking everyone over he adds with a smile at the sight of the horse with the group "...and that fee be a gold piece a foot that be a walking through the gate" (i.e. 16gp for the group)

The guards face lights up and replies "You drive a hard bargain stranger, but me and the lads like to be take it easy on most out-of-towners, so deal. Lets see the coin..."

The guards up above perk up also at the talk of coin and one moves over and pulls a gear that unlocks the gate. As Evendur is counting out the coin, Brak can move up and push open the unlocked gate. About then a great shout is raised from back in the village "Close that damn gate ye lazy bastards or I be a skinning ye alive!!!!"

The guard next to Evendur looks up in surprise and seems dumbfounded for a second, looking back the way the group had just come...

Levanna moved through the gate as quickly as she could. She stopped, spun on her heels and waited for the rest to get through.

"You heard the man. This gate is not open for non-paying foot traffic after all. Close it and secure it after us." Levanna said to the guard, lacing her words with magic and pushing her staff forward ever so slightly.

As they set off for the docks, Tirion quickly said a prayer for guidance to Pelor. It might be needed soon.

They reached the dock gate with little trouble. The fee was exorbitant, but they had little choice if they wished to escape the village quickly.

But not quickly enough, apparently, as the dwarven reinforcements arrived. Tirion hurried through with the others.

Shoving the guard to the ground Evendur and the group start heading out the gate. As she passes, Levanna makes her "suggestion" to which the guard nods dumbly as he stands up. Looking back you can see a group of six angry dwarfs running full out towards the gate. Of course your group all manages to pass through the gate before they get even close and the one guard, after picking himself off the ground, starts closing the gate!

"You idiot, you are letting them get a way!!! You on the wall, shot them or something!!!" shouts the lead dwarf, as the gate door closes.

Fleeing quickly the guards on the wall are slow to react and the party easily makes it out of crossbow range as the gate doors start opening again but by now the group is away into the darkness. You can hear cursing and yelling at the open gate but no signs of pursuit...

You find yourselves in the hilly grasslands of the Wild Coast. There are a few nearby houses that are build low to the group with stone roofs for defense. It is a fairly cloudy night but as the party moves away from the coast the fog quickly disappears.

Evendur sighs with relief as they make it out of the town, it would be a long time before they could show their faces there.

"I got a tip on where we might be able to get some mounts and we also might be able to get some information to boot."
