D&D 5E [IC] The New World (Volo Monsters)

Saashala quirks her eyebrows at Karok's question.

"This is your route," she replies. "You tell us." Then she looks around at the lay of the land, the mountain, and the not-too-distant burble of flowing water. "To all appearances though, I'd say we're getting relatively close. Invaders move primarily during the day. If no one's exhausted, we should press on. The plan hinges on us beating the caravan to the ambush point."

"I know the way through the mountains. I ask because you have the map of the region that...mom...gave to us," he answered. "Once we are out of the mountains, we will need to know how far away we are. We can reach the base of the mountains by noon if we push through. Beyond that, we would have to consult the map."

OOC: Looking back, it's supposed to take about a day to get from one point to another, so we should be able to take a long rest and still get there by that night. So, if we started at midnight, and it's morning, then we've been traveling 6 hours. I'm going to say 8 hour rest, then another 10 hours of travel, so five hours in the mountains and five hours to get to the road, assuming we'd be there by midnight. We can rest now, then travel 10 hours and rest there, or we can push through and get there before dark, and have plenty of time to set up the ambush for the next day. But if we push through, it could tire us. That leaves us weak if something attacks.

"Ripnek is tired," says the bugbear, although he seems more lazy than actually fatigued. He looks around to see if any of the others are with him on resting, staying on his feet and alert.

Drutha watched the lesser beings react to the sunlight. The snake-woman was all for pushing on as the orc called for camp. This could be an opportunity to undermine the beast’s attempts at taking over the little group.

“We press on,” she said. “Best to have too much time at the end than not enough.” She had done enough forced marches in the legion. “We can rest then.”

Karok shrugged at the hobgoblin's insistence, but inwardly he cursed. He needed to regain his power, and only resting would do that. He was far from helpless, but he would rather be at full strength.

He turned and began walking to the crossing he knew of. Maybe the damned hobgoblin would slip and fall into the river, never to be seen again. And maybe the bugbear would go with him. Maybe he would help.

Moon Moon will use his druidcraft cantrip to predict the weather for the next 24 hours in the area. If the weather is going to be good he agrees to go further. If the weather might be bad he may encourage caution, but mostly by being his usual terrified self.

Moon Moon whispers and gestures to the spirits, and they reward him with a small cloud that dances over his head. A moment later, Moon Moon feels cold drops pelting his head, as the cloud bursts into rain. Then they switch to icy little daggers, before the whole thing drifts apart into separate threads and disappears.

OOC: To recap the timing, the caravan is not supposed to pass on this arriving day, but the next. Therefore you have a day and a night to get to the ambush point, even if the caravan comes first thing in the morning.

As for the time needed to reach the ambush point, it depends on how openly you're willing to travel once you leave the mountains. On the open ground, you can cover 2 squares per hour at a normal pace (3 at a fast pace, 1 at a slow pace). In the mountains, your travel pace is about half that.

However, dawn will mark about 8 hours of travel. With the charge of getting your mission underway, you might press on to the edge of the mountains, but any farther than that without rest and you'll be on to a Forced March where you risk exhaustion.

The kobold is very confused by this water and ice phenomenon. "Camp? Camp. Camp? Camp? Camp. Camp?" He looks at others as if they might have a better idea what to make of things.

"Sleep safe during day in mountains, travel safe on plains during night." Says Nert, throwing in his lot with those that want to stop.
