[Idea] Rogue Class Feature: Skill Surge

Just an idea I had. Not sure if it's been done elsewhere before.

Skill Surge

A rogue has one Skill Surge per five levels. Any time an ability check, a saving throw, or an attack is rolled, a Skill Surge may be bet on the outcome. To make the bet, the player must select a target AC or DC. If the target AC or DC is equaled or exceeded, the Skill Surge is returned to the player. If the target AC or DC is not met, then the Skill Surge is spent for the day. In either case, the outcome of the roll is considered to be equal to the AC or DC chosen by the player.

Skill Surges replenish after a long rest.

First thought is that it seems too metagame for the core.

Second thought is that it's a bit too complicated for a feature that essentially boils down to "X times per day, auto-succeed."

Third thought is that I really don't want auto-successes to be a thing.

Yeah that's all very much what I was afraid of.

I really dig the Pathfinder diviner, and I feel like there ought to be a way to let the rogue do something similar but with more of a gambler-ish feel.
