Congress blocks light bulb efficiency standards as part of budget deal. Looks like 2014 isn't going to be the end of the road for the good old incandescent bulb after all.
January 1st, 2014 was the day that new energy standards that require 25% more efficient light bulbs were supposed to go into effect. This would have not been a BAN on incandescent bulbs, but it would have required you to buy more expensive, lower wattage versions of the same bulbs, or switch to CFLs. There were also numerous exceptions to the requirements. The legislation was called the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and was passed during the Bush administration.
As part of the 'spending bill' that looks like its set to pass both houses of congress, enforcement of the new standards is delayed. So you can still go off to the hardware store and buy a cheap 60 watt bulb, for now.
What do you guys think of this? Personally I do favor more efficient bulbs, but I also prefer warmer, gentler incandescent light. If CFLs could manage this I think people would be much more accepting of them. Changing the Tomas Edison Memorial to use LEDs is just stupid, though.
