Feel free to note here if you have thoughts on the rules. They are not set in stone yet. And I might even tweak them a little after we start if something just does not seem to be working. So I am still interested in feedback.

All the house rules sound reasonable to me. I am happy for you as the DM to worry about that stuff, but none of your changes to initiative and distances bother me. Hopefully you'll be able to tell us who each player is Close to, Adjacent, etc. each round?

Regarding my player character, seeing as pneumatik is planning a rogue, would you have a problem with me playing as a bard, or will those skill sets overlap too much? Since reading your intro, I've come up with a really cool concept in mind for a journalist-type gnome. Let me know if you think this will be a problem, otherwise I'll start writing him up tomorrow!

I will inform you of changes to distances during combat when it is the monsters' turn and you will inform me of changes to distances during your own turn. In other words, if you move your character, you will decide which monsters you are approaching. When I move the monsters, I will decide which characters they are approaching. It would probably be best to think of distances as being mostly linear. There won't be a lot of side-to-side movement being taken into consideration. This is just to keep things simple.

I think a bard has plenty to offer even if the party already has a rogue. You need not specialize in the same skills. You will also have spells and music. There are plenty of differences. If you want to be a gnome journalist, you might want to consider being a freelance writer for the Sharn Inquisitive or another newspaper. Perhaps you have a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly feature piece. It could be about your adventures. Or it could be about just about anything you want. Writing it could be part of your in-character actions and would earn your roleplaying XP.

Dorius Del Dalian, Junior Reporter

So, here is my character concept. I generated him using Pathguy's Eberron character generator, so if there are any changes you want to make, it's no problem to just generate it again. I've used one of the stat arrays you specified (16, 14, 14, 10, 9, 8) and taken the generic bard starting package from PHB2.

Regarding the non-stat elements of his character, Dorius is a gnome from Zilargo, working as a junior journalist for the Korranberg Chronicle, the main newspaper in Khorvaire. He has just recently been posted to Sharn as the foreign correspondent, to cover events there and to send his stories back to Zilargo to be published. I thought this backstory would work as he's a newcomer to Sharn, just as I am as a player. If you'd rather he have an established history in Sharn though, Dorius could just as easily be an orphan raised in a Silver Flame orphanage, who started as a paperboy and, after being taught to read, aspires to become a famous reporter, and has a junior role at the Sharn Inquisitive. Regarding his personality, he is a generally good-hearted and inquisitive guy, driven by the desire to become famous for his stories.

I love the idea of writing his articles for in-game xp. They would probably be a bit of gonzo-style journalism, where the writer is featured in the events of the article.

Let me know what you reckon of the character so far! Can't wait to see what pneumatik comes up with too.

I actually like the idea of a newcomer foreign correspondent working for the Korranberg Chronicle. I think you should go with that. His post in Sharn gives him a good reason to be there. It also ties in with the gnome background. Looks good to me.

pneumatik

The 8th Evil Sage
Berrent

Okay, here's my PC. He grew up with his family in Aundair in a life that was more sheltered than he realizes. His dad has a successful career in House Orien's lightning rail business. Berrent had a career promised to him working for his dad, but he wants to prove he can take care of himself. With little more than the clothes on his back and the gold in his pocket he hopped a train to Sharn (free thanks to his dad's position, of course). Once there he made contact with House Orien (so they could send a message to his parents than he made it) and went into business as a problem solver.

[/sblock][sblock=Description]
Brad is a Sharn native, who grew up surrounded by criminal elements. As a youth, he was a thug who helped in several robberies and shakedowns. However, he came to see this an an immature, foolish lifestyle, and vowed to become a law abiding citizen. This required an escape from his old identity, which he accomplished easily enough thanks to his changeling nature. He tells no one what his original name was. He currently works as a bouncer in a popular tavern, and sometimes acts as an informer for the city watch as he still blends in with criminals, but is seeking better work - perhaps as an inquisitive, someday.

His preferred appearance is that of a tall, dark-haired human male. He uses this most of the time, but he also has developed a few other personas, such as a 'mean-looking' half-orc male called Bront (who sometimes is 'called in' to 'back him up'), and a short 'friendly looking' blond-haired human woman called Mindy.[/sblock]

Note: I have played The Forgotten Forge.
