Into the Dragon's Maw (Adventure)

The dragonlings all lay dead at the bottom of the waters. The cavern was once more only filled with the sound of falling and rushing water as the heroes regrouped near the northeast corner of the room, they are able to more fully make out their surroundings.

Near them is a pile of bleached bones at least 15 feet in diameter resting in the murky water. The glint of metal can be seen intermixed in the mess of bones. Another column of water, perhaps 10 feet in diameter, tumbles into the pool to the far right. A pair of smaller waterfalls drops from the ceiling along the east wall. The stone path terminates at a wider ledge. The ledge appears to have been converted into a crude worship area. A crimson-stained, rough-hewn rock altar is prominently displayed. To the left is a black iron anvil inscribed with angular mithral runes that softly glow in the shadows.

Behind the altar, offset to the right in a rough niche bathed in soft illumination, is a glass dome perhaps 10 feet high situated on an ornate wooden base. Under the glass is a gnarled tree branch upon which is wrapped a magnificent feathered snake. The serpentine beast has a serene expression in its human-like milky eyes, and its rainbow-hued wings are folded along its back.

[section]Spotting something shiny, Pell twitched and peered closely into the dimly lit cavern. "What's that glinting, just there in that pile?" The young half-orc pointed at the bones. He moved as if to lurch forward toward the pile, but thought better of it when multiple blisters from dragon poison made themselves painfully known. Pell considered, then offered, "I could maybe do this trick thing," his eyes darted around at the others, trying to gauge their receptivity to his suggestion, "that I know how to do, maybe get whatever's glinting over to us?" He finished lamely, simultaneously wanting the others to agree but not wanting to divulge the extent of his ability.[/section]

OOC: Pell is offering to use Mage Hand Legerdemain: You can make mage hand invisible, and can perform the following additional tasks: 1) stow one object the hand is holding in a container worn or carried by another creature; 2) retrieve an object in a container worn or carried by another creature; 3) use thieves’ tools to pick locks and disarm traps at range. You can perform one of these tasks without being noticed by a creature if you succeed on a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check contested by the creature’s Wisdom (Perception) check. His Sleight of Hand check goes at +14.

'Well, that was... interesting. Someone look at the wingey snake thing and I'll paw through the bone pile. Equal shares.'

Pell quietly muttered the words to cast mage hand, then sent the hand zooming toward the shiny object in the bone pile. If the pile was too far away for him to reach with the hand, he crept closer, focusing all the while on manipulating the hand to do his will.

Mage hand legerdemaine [roll0] to grab the shiny thing and haul it back to the group

[section]'Not a good indication, wyrmlings, one must consider older siblings about.' The genasi broadcasts to the others, continuing, 'Before inspection of this area, it is apparent some of our number require attention, I am bequeathed to fabricate a safe haven for this respite; the preparation similar to my previous incantation cast upon our entry, once cast, will create a magical field of protection around myself, and those of you who remain within my vicinity before completion.'

Ignis doesn't deliberate on the matter, he moves to dry ground at the end of the causeway leading up towards the anvil, and sits cross-legged. Pulling out his red, flame emblazoned tome, he flips through its waxen pages. His spindly crackled finger pausing on one page, he looks up to think, before nodding in disagreement to nobody in particular. Resuming the page turning, he comes at last to his desired spell and begins reciting the Draconic script. His eyes rolling back as he slowly circles his staff around above his head, its ruby orb glowing and leaving traces of the weave lingering about him. [/section]

As Pell works his magic to retrieve the shiny bit from the bone pile, he finds it wedged in tight. As he begins to work his mage hand to move the pieces about, he has a sudden realization. The bones are fitted together with purpose. As he dismantles further, he manages to free a round shield. The glint seems to have been from the inner surface of the shield which has been polished to a mirror shine.

As the shield is removed, a gap is made large enough into the pile for everyone to see that the pile is hollow. The glint of further treasure gleams in bone hollow.

As Radaceus begins his ritual, he feels as if he is being watched intently. He first glances towards the feathered serpent, but the fire inside of him sparks slightly when he looks at the anvil.

'Careful moving those bones, the weight could be a trap trigger. lets move only what we have to to see what else might be in there.'
Cade begins inspecting the bones as best he can to try to determine what they are from and if he can determine if he threat of a trap is real.

Pell stayed as far away from the bone pile as he could, but continued working to free the shiny shield. He tried to maneuver the shield with his mage hand, pulling the shield toward the group if possible. His eyes flicked on occasion to the altar and the queer feathered serpent. What's the worst that could go wrong? We grab the shiny bits and high tail it out of here. That pile of bones comes to life? Or that snake in the glass bubble frees itself and goes on a rampage? Pell tried very hard to concentrate on his feat of legerdemain, but the more he fretted, the harder it became to focus. His mage hand wobbled a time or two as it worked at the shield.

The shield comes loose and floats gently towards Pell buoyed by his mage hand. Cade peers into the gap that Pell has made and sees that the bones have been fitted to make a domed room inside of about 5ft in diameter. He is able to see a few tiny green scales noticeably smaller than the dragonlings you just fought casually shed around the lair. On the far edge, there looks to be a tunnel which leads down into the water.

Scattered around the floor inside the bone pile, Cade sees a silver buckle, a yellow gem, and an arrow with an odd head.

Pell grasped the shield as soon as it came close enough to reach. He kept the mage hand hovering nearby, at the ready, in case it was needed again. The young half-orc turned the shield over thrice, examining it for markings, and hefting it for weight.

OOC: Is it magical?
