Is Rope Trick broken!?

Noman

First Post
Rope Trick creates an extradimensional space with room to fit a party of 7 while having the rope tucked in. Does this mean:

1. no one can see in from the outside, or for that matter, the portal itself?
2. no one can come in from the outside without the rope?
3. you can rest while inside

This could be abused inside a dungeon.

Correct. Though they can see the rope if you don't pull it inside. If they can see the rope, they can climb it. If they can climb the rope, they can get inside.

See previous answer.

Well, Rope Trick could really drive a DM crazy if a party could just rest safely after every big encounter inside a dungeon, providing of course that time is of no importance. I know my DM is going nuts.

As was mentioned in the other thread about PCs taking too much time in the dungeon...

Okay....you go into your extra dimensional space. In the meantime, the enemy will beef up his security, improve his traps, move forward(and maybe complete) his diabolical plans and if he feels really threatened, just pack up and leave with all his treasure.

Time matters.

Until some paranoid lvl 1 wizard comes along with detect magic and finds them, and makes sure the complete dungeon is waiting for them when they come out. :D

Including hiding, that's what it's meant to do. If your DM has a problem with that, tell him to deal with it. That's what he gets for having a spellcaster in the party. ;)

I don't know if you can call something an "abuse" when it's clearly the whole purpose for which the spell was designed. That's more like a "use."

Now, whether you agree that having this capability is a good thing is another matter.

It's also worth noting that by the level (8th) where this spell has sufficient duration to allow a full night's rest, not being able to bring another extradimensional space inside (e.g. a bag of holding or Heward's handy haversack) is actually quite a serious limitation. Such things are quite useful and probably not uncommon at that level.
