Regarding the sword wielding character in the V&V section you have listed as unknown, he is called Excalibur.

That's the fourth different name that I've heard for him. :) So far, has been called Nemesis, Stormbringer, Darkstorm and now Excalibur. If that character doesn't have a multiple personality disorder, he should. :)

(GMV has almost all V&V modules and game books :) )

Have you seen this obscure V&V module? The Star-Devourer by Steve Perrin (originally published in Different Worlds #35 (1984).

Cheers,
Tim

I'm at work. I'll have to check and see about the name when I get home. I may not be correct about the name. Stormbringer is sounding better to me as I think on it though.

I've heard about the adventure, but I've never located that issue of Different Worlds.

Awesome, awesome stuff...

I agree with Monte on the M&T Assortment pic. I had forgotten about that one. Love it.

With regards to the Unknowns in the V&V gallery I have some suggestions on names:

-I always thought he was the Flying Cobra
-Motivator I is also Mirage from Most Wanted (which is an easy one of course ;))
-The dark guy with the sword is Darkstorm. In the rule book on page 19 there is the mini-drawing of the character within a snow storm, but the real clue is on page 32. In the mini-comic strip (which the character is also featured) he is referred to as "Stormy".
-The babe with the power blast is a tough one, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's Amazon
-Jeff opens the rule book with his own character, Gauntlet, so it's only fitting that the book ends with Jack Herman's character, Mouser. I have no idea who the big guy is.

Another bit of trivia has to do with the V&V adventure "The Secret In the Swamp" (from the cover gallery). The author is Stewart Wieck, brother of Steve Wieck. They went on to form White Wolf. ;)

Thanks. Glad you enjoy it. To be honest, I've been blown away by the response that the galleries have received. I figured a few people might get a kick out of them, but nothing like this. With that said, expect another update very soon. ;)

So did I, but I recently had someone (who has gamed with Jeff Dee, Jack Herman & Bill Willingham :p) tell me that he thinks that the guy's name is Pharaoh. I think I'll change his name to 'unknown' with the next update until I can figure it out for sure.

Actually, my source (see above) said his name is Stormbringer. I think I'll leave it as unknown for the time being. :)

That sounds good, but I've recently found out that some of the illustrations in the V&V rulebook were simply created for the game and weren't based on any specific characters. I guess I won't really know until I email Jeff Dee and ask him. ;)

Heh, I didn't know that. The thing that surprised me was the cover to "Battle Above the Earth". The art is quoted as being from Bain Sidhe Studio which includes such comic professionals as Bill Willingham (naturally) and Matt Wagner (of Grendel and Mage fame)! Cool. :)

Cheers,
Tim
who should start working on that update ;)

I don't know, considering your views towards the V&V game... (just kidding). :D

No plans for an Erol Otis gallery even though I'm seriously tempted. :) Actually if I do branch off from the Jeff Dee art vein, I'm tempted to make a gallery of those old D&D ads that use to run in Marvel comics around 1983/84. The ones with Grimslade the Fighter, Indel the Elf, Valerius the Wizard, and Saren the Cleric. The art was mostly done by Bill Willingham but I think at least one was done by Jeff Dee (don't quote me on that ;)).

Man, I have been so thinking about those, recently; I'd dig through my 15,000 or so comics to find 'em just to read 'em if I could, but most of my books from that era are a little fragile. I'm not sure about the Dee art, but you're pretty spot-on about Willingham. The first one that I recall seeing had pretty rank art, though; that's the one where Indel got scragged by the green slime.

Thank you. I've pretty much exhausted my supply of D&D Jeff Dee art, but I have a ton of V&V art coming soon (characters & covers). In either case, I'm keeping my eyes open just in case I see something that I can add to the gallery.

Hey, I'll look at Jeff's art anytime, regardless of the subject-matter! [Edit: Ya know, that doesn't sound as positive as I'd meant it to, in retrospect...:D ]

Thanks again. Here is a bigger version of my avatar if you want to see more detail. :)

Cheers,
Tim

I agree about the art in the first one. I thought that maybe the 2nd one was a Jeff Dee drawing since it looks different from the rest (which were done by Willingham) but then again it could just be that someone else did the inks over Willingham's pencils.

I don't know, you be the judge yourself: :)

That's all that I've found so far. I pretty much have a complete run of Avengers and X-Men from the mid 80s but I'll keep checking my collection to see if I can find more. I think I have them listed in order, but you never know. ;) After a certain date, the TSR ads seem to be just for the Star Frontiers game.

Heh heh, don't worry about it. I was only kidding anyways. Jeff Dee's art is so cool that it transcends any particular rule system. :D

Hmmm, that first one is as bad as I remember (what's Indel doing in that one panel, anyway? I don't recall ''hovering'' as an elven ability...); reminds me of cheesey classic GI Joe and Johnny West ads.

The second might just be a Dee -- the style is different enough (I was going to comment on character design but those seem inconsistent throughout the series), but the rest are most certainly Willingham.

Fair enough. At least we know the "Storm" part is right.;)

Yeah, but...he's got the mouse motiff going pretty large. It's got to be Mouser...no? :D

I would would post them if I had them. [hint][hint]

Actually, I could use some help locating a pic... Does anyone have a copy of the old Basic Edition D&D with the Erol Otus cover (1981)? If so, could you please scan the pic of the female warrior with sword in hand (it's in the first half of the book IIRC) and send it to me? I would greatly appreciated it.

Anyway, if you're running out of Jeff Dee scans, I've got a few to contirbute that you still don't have up yet (Cover to Tomb of Horrors, full page illustration in D3, etc.) I'll see what I can do about the basic D&D pic (I can't find my copy! But I know people who have it.) I also have the Elric stuff that the Colonel requested, but he's got me spooked on the copyright thing. I don't forsee it being a problem though. ;) Plus, there's all the stuff from Top Secret that one must consider...

I'm super busy now, but give me about a week and I'll start getting them out if you're cool with it.

Cheers!
