Doesn't the ring's text say that casting from the ring uses Spell Slots? Wouldn't that make it a no go for a non-slot having class?

You use a spell slot when you store the spell, not when you cast it from the spell. Anyone can cast it, but the stats from the spell come from the spell slot, attack bonus, and Save DC from the character who stored the spell.

Hex and Hunter's Mark stand out as good possibilities.

Thinking about the interaction with the fact it stores spell levels and uses spell levels, but you can overpower spells by using more powerful slots. So a Caster places a 1st level spell using a 9th level slot, I mean it is still a first level spell. For example warlocks always cast spells with at the highest power because the way their casting works. So a 9th level warlock places hex in the ring it is a first level spell but cast at the power of a 5th level slot so it has a duration of 24 hours.

It does seem to have the most hilarious utility when put on a non-casting character. Giving the rogue a ring with, say, invisibility and fireball. Or just Cone of Cold. Or wall of stone. Or giving the Fighter leading the villagers against the horde of orcs the same ring with Cure Wounds, Mass on it.

You might also use this to spread out lower level buff concentration spells amongst the party. Have the rogue (or someone similarly unlikely to be hit) cast it, and the Cleric cast whatever higher level buff he has prepped.

EDIT: Ha! Cast Commune into the ring and put it on whatever person in your life is having a crisis of faith. Instant revelations.

The item only allows for up to a 5th level spell slot. The level of the slot determines how much space is used, not the level of the spell.

Give the rest of the party Find Familiar and Find Steed during downtime.

Hand off concentration buffs like Bless to others who normally have no use for concentration. For example, a fighter archer isn't in melee so is likely hit less then a melee cleric for less Con saves needed, and has a con mod and Con proficiency for when needed. Plus the cleric can bust out other concentration spells.

Someone mentioned Hex and Hunter's Mark, but those might be even better with higher level slots to give them 8 hour duration so it's only cast once, those using more of the 5 levels per day.

Remember too, that while one-off effects on non-casters are interesting, the ring will need to be refilled by a caster expending precious slots. Great for down time though.

Off the top of my head, I'd be inclined to hand out a Ring of Spell Storing charged up with Raise Dead.

What will the players do? Keep the spell around if they need it, making the ring kinda useless until then? Or throw the spell and its 500gp component away and hope that no one important dies? Decisions, decisions.

Cheers,
Roger
