Many thanks to Klaus (dwarf cleric), Lorthanoth (dragonborn fighter), Jack99 (half-elf paladin), Bagpuss (elf ranger), evilhalfling (halfling rogue), Kishin (tiefling warlock), Blargney the Second (eladrin warlord), and RangerWickett (human wizard) for all the character concepts and builds.

If the goal is really to build iconics some "Rules of Iconics" should apply.

1. Iconic characters are the most mainstream build of each race and character class. Stereotypes of each character class should definitely apply with probably an emphasis on the historical build of the class in earlier editions of Dungeons & Dragons.

2. It is not important for each iconic to be the most mechanically optimized build. In fact, iconics are likely better ambassadors for their character class when they are more rounded to the class and less optimized.

3. In order to embody one character class most strongly, iconics can't dilute their message. Thus iconic characters for a specific class should never multiclass.

4. Myth and entertainment (movies, books, &c) have established certain ideals for character classes to aspire towards. Each iconic should work towards the most iconic Paragon path for their class.

5. Similarly with epic destinies, while it might be mechanically better for every class to go for Demigod there are some destinies that are more thematically suited for different classes. To take the example further, probably only divine source characters should choose Demigod.

Bagpuss did an exceptionally good job of using the unspoken "Rules of Iconics" by making the elf ranger capable of both iconic ranger abilities (two-blade and archer fighting). Kishin's warlock is also very iconic by making the obvious choice of pairing a demonic race (tiefling) with a demonic pact (infernal). When it comes to iconic builds the Blood Mage paragon path is probably the least iconic Player Character choice for an iconic wizard build. The blood mage concept remains cool even though it isn't very iconic; that's the difference between iconic builds and just making a character.

You make some really good points.

I considered taking a crack at drawing up one of these iconics if I found one that inspired me. First I wanted to make sure if that would be okay.

Balasar Hammerwing

Level 1
[sblock]Race: Dragonborn
Class: Fighter 1 (Two-handed)
Abilities: Str 18 (+4), Con 14 (+2), Dex 13 (+1), Int 10 (+0), Wis 14 (+2), Cha 10 (+0)
Feat: Weapon Focus - Heavy Blade
Trained Skills: Athletics, Intimidate, Endurance

At-Wills: Cleave, Reaping Strike
Encounter: Dragon Breath (Fire), Passing Strike
Daily (1/day): Villain's Menace

Equipment: Greatsword, dagger, scale armor, Adventurer's Kit, incense sticks for meditation[/sblock]

Balasar trained in with the greatest teachers of martial prowess of the current age, fought in undeclared wars in the march-lands, and is the heir to a centuries-old tradition of swordplay. These days, however, he is more likely to be found in a flophouse or taven, drinking his last few coppers away.

Level 5
[sblock]Race: Dragonborn
Class: Fighter 1 (Two-handed)
Abilities: Str 19 (+4), Con 14 (+2), Dex 14 (+2), Int 10 (+0), Wis 14 (+2), Cha 10 (+0)
Feats: Weapon Focus - Heavy Blade, Quick Draw, Blade Opportunist
Trained Skills: Athletics, Intimidate, Endurance

At-Wills: Cleave, Reaping Strike
Encounter: Dragon Breath (Fire), Passing Strike, Dance of Steel
Daily: Villain's Menace, Rain of Steel
Utility: No Opening

Equipment: +1 Terror Greatsword, dagger, +2 Scale Armor, Ironskin belt, Adventurer's Kit, incense sticks for meditation[/sblock]

An encounter with a halfling pickpocket was the unlikely turning point for Balasar; instead of mulling over past glories, he was out in the wide world again. Clean, committed to rooting out corruption wherever it may lurk.

Level 15
[sblock]Race: Dragonborn
Class: Fighter (Two-handed)
Paragon Path: Swordmaster
Abilities: Str 22 (+6), Con 16 (+3), Dex 16(+3), Int 11 (+0), Wis 15 (+2), Cha 11 (+0)
Feats: Weapon Focus - Heavy Blade, Quick Draw, Blade Opportunist, Dragonborn Frenzy, Potent Challenge, Empowered Dragon Breath, Armour Specialization (scale), Mettle, Danger Sense
Trained Skills: Athletics, Intimidate, Endurance

At-Wills: Cleave, Reaping Strike
Encounter: Dragon Breath (Fire), Storm of Blows, Dance of Steel, Griffon's Wrath, Precision Cut
Daily: Dragon's Fangs, Rain of Steel, Thicket of Blades
Utility: No Opening, Battle Awareness, Into the Fray, Fantastic Flourish

Equipment: +3 Terror Greatsword, dagger, +4 Scale Armor, +3 Safewing Amulet, Adventurer's Kit, incense sticks for meditation[/sblock]

Thunderspire Labyrinth was never the same after Balasar and his comrades had been there for some time. A pact with a band of Minotaurs who sought to reclaim the Labyrinth not for Baphomet, but for Erathis, brought them into conflict with many of the evil denizens of the underground. In the end an uneasy truce was reached, but Balasar began to tire of the constant conflict in his life.

Level 25
[sblock]Race: Dragonborn
Class: Fighter (Two-handed)
Paragon Path: Swordmaster
Epic destiny: Demigod
Abilities: Str 27 (+8), Con 20 (+5), Dex 18(+4), Int 12 (+1), Wis 16 (+3), Cha 12 (+1)
Feats: Weapon Focus - Heavy Blade, Quick Draw, Blade Opportunist, Dragonborn Frenzy, Potent Challenge, Empowered Dragon Breath, Armour Specialization (scale), Mettle, Danger Sense, Heavy Blade Opportunity, Combat Anticipation, Heavy Blade Mastery, Blind Fight, Danger Sense
Trained Skills: Athletics, Intimidate, Endurance

At-Wills: Cleave, Reaping Strike
Encounter: Dragon Breath (Fire), Fangs of Steel, Vorpal Tornado, Griffon's Wrath, Precision Cut
Daily: Supremacy of Steel, Devastation's Wake, Thicket of Blades, Crescendo Sword
Utility: No Opening, Battle Awareness, Into the Fray, Fantastic Flourish, Iron Warrior, No Surrender

Equipment: +3 Terror Greatsword, dagger, +4 Scale Armor, +3 Safewing Amulet, Adventurer's Kit, incense sticks for meditation[/sblock]

After many years secluded in a meditational retreat, Balasar has found that he cannot avoid his destiny. The very fabric of existence is under threat, and only the greatest of the great can contend against the forces arrayed against life itself. That and Bunny has been talking to bits of jewellery...

Description:

6' 6'' tall, broad-shouldered, serious expression. His scale armour has a somewhat Chinses feel to it: Image and his greatsword is similar in style to the nodachi: [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nodachi.jpg"[/url]Image[/url].

As he progresses through the higher levels, his gear becomes more ornate. His expression also changes from world-weary to idealistic (perhaps overly so) to serious even serene at the highest level.

Balasar Hammerwing

Here's what I whipped up. He doesn't have as much of a chinese feel as the written description, but for an iconic it felt more appropriate to have a look that was closer to the standard dragonborn in the PHB.
