The Undead Crusaders had been tracking the vampire through the night, through the cold mists swirling across the eldritch moorland. Only Maelwen seemed unfazed by the long journey, his dark eyes restlessly scanning the horizon as he strode forward purposefully.
Suddenly, he crouched down, tracing the edges of a track in the mud with long fingers.
“We’re close,” he muttered to his companions.
As the sun edged over the horizon, Maelwen finally spotted what he had been looking for – a ramshackle manor house crouched on the edge of a far hillside, its windows boarded up.
Cutting across a damp gully, the adventurers approached the house with tired relief and some trepidation. The murders in the area over the past months had been horrific and the resultant spawn had taken them several draining days to take out.
Maelwen paused at the door, breathing deeply, concentrating. Slowly, his eyes seemed to fill with what looked like black ink, until the pupils, irises and whites became completely dark.
“That still unnerves me – it almost looks like you are the undead,” the cleric whispered, “but if it aids you to see in the dark, then…” he trailed off.
“Let’s do this,” Maelwen returned with a grimace as the halfling rogue bent to the locked front door. Maelwen muttered incantations over his longbow and curved elven blade, which he called Bloodbane, and he felt them grow slightly heavier, more potent. He then picked out a vial with a slightly silvery liquid in it, downing it to help protect him from the evil he knew lay inside. Finally he strung his bow and nocked a silvered arrow.
Inside, the entrance hall was huge and dark, rising thirty feet into a domed roof strung with rotting beams. Maelwen’s companions pressed past to either side, looking left and right. However, Maelwen was the first to spot the movement from the rotted beams overhead as the foul vampire crawled across the ceiling.
“Up there,” he whispered gesturing at the roof and granting his companions the benefit of his preternatural senses and knowledge of this type of undead creature. In one fluid movement, Maelwen let fly the readied arrow from his bow, drew another from the quiver on his back and loosed again. The arrows struck home and the creature screamed in agony. With a horrifying shudder of flesh, the vampire transformed into a huge bat and dropped from the ceiling towards them, fangs dripping with bloody saliva.
As one, the Undead Crusaders let fly with arrow and bolt, some hitting home whilst others flew wide of the madly flapping beast.
The dire bat arced around the group before swooping to take the halfling rogue by his shoulders and dragged him across the huge hall and down a set of stone stairs that led off from the far end of the hall.
Maelwen raced after them, running silently down the spiral stairs before creeping slowly from the staircase exit at the base into what appeared to be a cave-like crypt, criss-crossed by tall stone columns and with numerous small rooms built into the sides of the larger colonnaded chamber.
A growling emanated from some of the small rooms and Maelwen saw wolves, their hackles raised, slinking towards him and his remaining two companions through the columns. The wolves snarled and raced to the attack. Maelwen again fired off two quick arrows before twisting sinuously through the wolves, leaving the cleric and the sorcerer to deal with the vampire’s lupine servants.
From the far end of the chamber, Maelwen caught the disgusting sound of slurping and he again ran silently towards the sound, oblivious that the other two members of the crusaders had not yet caught up with him in the pitch blackness.
As he rounded one of the stone columns at the end of the chamber he saw in front of him the vampire, returned to its former shape, on the top of an ancient sarcophagus, the lid slightly skewed. The vampire was hunched over his halfling companion, its slightly elongated jaws fastened to the neck of the dazed rogue.
Leaping over the vampire’s head, Maelwen tore the halfling from the jaws of the creature and stood between him and the vampire, drawing his magical blade, Bloodbane. The vampire stared at him, its bloodshot eyes piercing his soul, attempting to sway him from his self-appointed duty. “Bring the body to me,” the vampire croaked in a hoarse whisper.
Maelwen swayed for a moment when faced with the onslaught of the vampire’s will but he touched his dove-shaped birthmark at his wrist and the potion he had consumed suddenly flooded through his brain, allowing him to shake off the vampire’s influence. Seeing the spark of defiance in Maelwen’s stance, the vampire launched itself at the elf, attempting to grapple the ranger to the floor but Maelwen wriggled from the vampire’s grasp. He leapt to the top of the stone sarcophagus, sweeping Bloodbane around in a sharp arc and cutting into the vampire’s flesh. Blood arced and spurted across the walls of the chamber but Maelwen already noticed the vampire’s wound beginning to close. Again and again the vampire and Maelwen leapt at each other, Bloodbane slicing through the undead creature’s flesh with ease.
Finally the cleric emerged from behind one of the columns, his holy symbol of Sarenrae held towards the vampire, and the creature turned to snarl at the symbol with its holy glow. In that instant, Maelwen danced forward and sliced the elven blade into the chest of the vampire with all his fury. The vampire screeched and crumpled to the ground.
In an instant, Maelwen retrieved an ancient wooden box from his backpack, opening it to retrieve an ornate hammer and a sharpened stake. He placed the stake against the vampire’s heart. Suddenly, the vampire’s eyes flickered open as its grievous wound began to close up. Before the vampire had a chance to open its blood-flecked fangs Maelwen smashed the hammer onto the head of the stake and it plunged into the vampire’s heart.
The companions dragged the vampire up into the entrance hall and cut the head from the creature to ensure it remained dead. Then, with barely a backward glance as he left, Maelwen tossed a jar of alchemist’s fire into the hall. The flames burst against an enormous table in the centre of the hall and licked towards the dry tinder of the roof.
The long shadows of the companions flickered and danced as the Undead Crusaders journeyed on.

Maelwen Deathseeker is over 6 feet tall, slim and pale featured, with long dark hair and brown eyes that turn completely black when he uses his Undead Adaptation ability. On his wrist is a pure white birthmark, slightly resembling the shape of a dove, a symbol of Sarenrae. He wears a dark green, hooded cloak, embroidered with elven symbolic designs. He carries a masterwork longbow and has a dozen silvered arrows with silver fletching. At his side he carries his +1 Undead Bane Elven Curved Blade, ‘Bloodbane’.

Tactics
Before knowingly entering combat with a vampire, Maelwen:
1. Rubs garlic around his neck and wrists.
2. Casts his two spells, lead blades and gravity bow. Both effects last 5 minutes. This and other additional benefits (e.g. favoured enemy, undead crusader trait, +1 undead bane weapon) provides the following combat totals against vampires for each of these weapons:
• Elven Curved Blade (+19 to hit vampires, 18-20 crit x 2): 2d8 plus 2d6 + 6
• Masterwork Longbow (+16 to hit vampires (+15 x 2 with Point Blank Shot and Rapid Shot), 20 crit x 3): 2d6 plus 2d6 + 5
3. Quaffs a protection of evil potion in an attempt to negate the vampire’s dominate person ability. However, even if Maelwen runs out of these potions, the elven natural resistance to enchantment and his birthmark’s power to help resist charms and compulsions provides a total of +6 to Will saves against this effect. He will almost certainly take the Iron Will feat next to boost this higher.
4. Activates his Darkvision adaptation ability (bearing in mind he can do this five times a day for 10 minutes per use).

Maelwen first seeks to fire his silvered arrows at vampires (negating their Damage Resistance), using his high Stealth (+13) and Silent Hunter ability to get within 30 feet of the vampire before making use of his Point Blank Shot and Rapid Shot feats.

Once in melee combat, Maelwen favours Bloodbane, his +1 Undead Bane Elven Curved Blade (also negates the vampire’s Damage Resistance). Maelwen can also pass on a +2 bonus to close allies fighting the vampire through his Hunting Companions ability. If necessary, Maelwen can use his Acrobatics check (+10) to improve his chances of moving through a threatened square or the vampire’s space.

If attacking the vampire’s Children of the Night, Maelwen benefits from his +2 favoured enemy bonus against animals.

When being attacked by a vampire, Maelwen gains a +2 to his AC (to make it AC 21 in total) from his Favored Defense feat. In addition, Maelwen can add +2 to his CMD (to make his total 22) when resisting a vampire’s Blood Drain ability. As he gains levels, Maelwen will try to increase his Fortitude saving throw score to aid in resisting the vampire’s energy drain ability. When defending against the vampire’s Children of the Night Maelwen gains a +1 from his Favored Defense feat (for a total of AC 20).
