I'm going to play a Wizard (Diviner) after the summer. As I see it, mage armor is useful when you expect to be bashed ALOT in the next hours; on the other hand, for the offchance attack shield wins the competition, more so if you take into account the Arcane Recovery feature (and if you're an Abjurer on top of that? WHOOHOO!)
All in all, it actually depends on how much your arcanist gets attacked, but for the average going I would favour shield over mage armor.
Of course everything changes if you:
a) are a mountain dwarf
b) get hold of a suit of elven chain
c) obtain some decent armor proficiency (through feats or multiclassing)
