MD-VA-DC Game Day - 10/2/04: Crunch Time Approaches - Volunteers Needed!

Venue Update - 6/2

Greetings Gang,

Preliminary Update on Venues:

1. DreamWizards (Rockville, MD): I have a call in to Lauren (I think that is her name), the owner, about scheduling the space. 8/28 does not look good, according to the guy manning the phones, but there are dates later in the fall.

2. University of Maryland (College Park): Xath...any response from the Guild there? Besides a "free" venue, such as DreamWizards above, this is the most economical large scale alternative. If we get student co-sponsorship, we could probably pull this off for under $200.

3. Northern Virginia Community College (Alexandria Campus): The Annandale Campus is booked forever....and I do mean forever. The Alexandria Campus does have availability on 8/28 (and 9/11 and 9/18), but their rates are a bit high. Assuming we can get the non-profit rate...which might be iffy...we are looking at ~ $350 -$400 for 10 hours. If we are deemed "for-profit" (I think I can talk my way around that), the prices would double.

Other possibilities:

Game Parlor and George Mason - While convenient to the N. Virginia folks, there are really a hike for those coming down from Baltimore and points north (not that I am afraid to drive...I commute to Old Town Alexandria from Northern Baltimore County 3-4 days a week...by car...yes...I am insane :p!).

More to follow...

I'd be up for this. As for my particulars, here you go:

(1) I am willing to GM. I would prefer to run All Flesh Must Be Eaten, Chill (Mayfair Rules) or 7th Sea (original d10 rules), since it seems we have a plethora of D&D DMs.

(2) I would prefer to GM an afternoon slot.

(3) I am willing to help organize and coordinate the game day.

(4) I have no thoughts on location, but since I'm just outside BWI the further north the venue the better.

Gosh darnit Old One,

I swear I had actually sent them an E-mail in an attempt to avoid a long distance call. Sorry I couldn't get that info back to you a little sooner. If ya need me for something else, just let me know.

As for the drive you mentioned, that is insane. I take it that you use your game to take out all that built up frustration, eh? Poor players.

Sorry :p! Not a dig at you...I was running through a bunch of stuff...got a wild hair up you-know-where and picked up the phone. Lauren (or Laurel), the owner, is out of town until Friday anyway...so no sweat. Just let me know what you find out and we can compare notes.

As far as the commute goes...it sucks. We will eventually relocate closer in, but some extended family health issues prevent an immediate re-location. I do get to listen to lots of books-on-tape however...good for expanding them mind.

PS - I would never take my frustration out on my players...their PCs are an entirely different story, however :D!

What I am running

Morning Slot or Afternoon slot

D&D 3.5 Adventure
PH Core book classes
Character Generation 25 pt buy

preferr 4-6 players (might allow 2 more if not enough DMs available)

I would also be willing to DM in the afternoon another D&D 3.5 game.

Might make one an all outdoor adventure and the other a dungeon crawl.

Also considering an Eberron adventure, depends on feedback???

Not a problem at all Old One. I'll make certain to give her a call come Friday. I'll be in at work and can we say "free long distance". Whooho! Well, 'Whooho' other then the work.

Good luck with those family issues. I wish you the best of luck along with sympathies for the issue.

As for the ride, as long as you're not actually reading the books while you drive...of course, I did know a teacher of mine who use to read and drive at the same time (ironically, he was an English teacher).

I'll get back to you come Friday about DreamWizards!

I figured that I'd throw out one other suggestion if you guys have limited options for a venue: A public park.

There are tons of these sorts of places that have large picnic shelters with half a dozen or more tables at them. They rent for almost nothing, have plenty of grills available should you want to cook out for lunch and (minor consideration) they don't get nearly as loud as places like the concrete block room we were in for NCGDIV. If the weather is really nasty then that might be bad and you may need to plan on bringing a couple extra paperweights so character sheets don't go blowing all over the place. But other than that it seems like it would be a relatively pleasant gaming environment. And it would likely shift your cost per player from the $5-$10 range to something more like $1-$2.

As to how to organize the schedule, we've got a pretty kickin' website these days but I don't think there is anything wrong with just setting up the first post of the thread as a place to post what games are when and who's participating in them. One suggestion I would make if you do that is to have all players signing up use some sort of coding to make their sign-ups stand out. Like post in chartreuse or something like that. It makes it much easier for the organizer to browse through the thread and pick out who wants to play in what game.

Late summer + Mid-Atlantic + Afternoon = Thunderstorms (and lots of gamer sweat) ;)!

That can be a back-up plan...but I think most people would rather throw in $5 for air-conditioned comfort!

Since we don't have your "too-cool-for-school" sign-up sight...the color-coded games is a great idea.

Thanks!

There are a couple of ways to get this set up. You can see how they are doing it here:

http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=87328

NCGD has a very elegant solution, but it requires much more technical smarts than I have (NCSU CodeMonkey, are u there :D?).

Barring a better solution, I will probably just put it all on an excel spreadsheet and attach for download.

My first order of business is to get the venue/date/space locked in...the actual game planning can follow.

Old One,

No problem. It was just a suggestion.

One of my regular players lives only a few blocks from DreamWizards. He can do the leg work for us if that helps. Also, I would be willing to be the contact for getting the game venu set up.

Everybody knows that when gamers sweat we smell like flowers. ;)

Good luck with the planning. I'm getting ready to go out and celebrate my birthday and then head to the beach for a long weekend. I'll check in when I get back.
