As an aside, with these recent discussions regarding plural pronouns and singular antecedents, I just wanted to call out your sig. I made a comment a few days ago about when I walked into a bike shop in Portland and one of the employees had their nametag as "they/their". It helped me tremendously. It's reasonable for people to use gender pronouns based on what stereotypical gender a person appears as (after all, 99% of the time it's matching). But it's also reasonable to not want to offend anyone who doesn't identify as a stereotypical gender, and giving me the head's up about what you prefer to be called helps me from making a mistake. So I greatly appreciate that. Thank you.
I admit I get hung up on grammar a bit (as a writer who works with editors, and as a professional in a corporate climate I sort of have to), but if someone advises they prefer a different pronoun, I don't see any reason to be a jerk and refuse their very basic request.
A manager of mine years and years ago had a saying that I love: "No reasonable request should ever be unreasonably declined."
