Melee Touch Attack Criti Hit

Sporelock

First Post
A melee touch attack spell that deals damage can be affected by a critical hit. So, a caster rolling a 20 on his to hit roll with Vampiric Touch will do double damage if the crit is confirmed.

What if the caster uses an unarmed attack to work the spell instead of the touch attack? If he hits and scores a successful critical hit, do both the unarmed attack damage and the Vampiric Touch double? 1d3+str x2 AND (at 6th level) 3d6 x2?

It does not seem like both should be affected by the critical hit because the Vampiric Touch damage would work more like extra dice (Similar to weapons with an energy ability) and thus unaffected by the crit.

Right. Complete Arcane confirms that if you deliver a touch spell with an unarmed strike and score a critical hit, only the unarmed strike damage is doubled.
