Murder on the Throaty Mermaid (Skull & Shackles prelude) - IC

Thy wounds are healed!
So far I am enjoying the read of this little adventure. It has a way to make the murder different each time - kind of like Clue - and has some interesting developments.

Not much to say in this post. I will use it as the Treasure tracker, NPC provider and all that till I get an actual RG up and running. Main thing here is to see how the characters do as a group and how I'm going to get it to merge into the AP.

Should be fun all around - Let's adventure.

The Throaty Mermaid is not what one would call a grand ship. Getting it's name from the busty figurehead smoking a very large pipe, the ship has seen better days that is for sure (unless it was built with worn timber and rusted nails), but it is a job, and for life on the sea you take what you can get.

So far the sailing has been smooth and Captain Veane seems a component smuggler. He keeps his ship sailing by night and hidden in the day, he knows how to talk his way out of an "inspection" whenever he does have to put in to port, and he keeps a good supply of grog and gives out extra rations for those who do their jobs and do them well. The last two months have been quite comfortable, if rather dull.

And then the Throaty Mermaid docks in Magnimar. While taking on supplies the captain goes ashore for more than half the day and returns with the sun about to set, and he is not alone. A tall robed and cowled figure accompanies the captain and they both move immediately to his cabin without a word.

Then Captain Veane comes back out on deck and speaks to the first mate, a man named Marzack Mallickm. When they are finished the captain goes back to his cabin and Marzack starts barking orders. "Prepare to make for sea! Cast off those lines! Bring out the main sail! Tie down those barrels so they don't wash out to sea! Move you cretins!"

As he moves along barking orders he looks right at each of you and calls out a different order. "You! Yes you! Re-equip yourselves! You are now on guard duty! Find a blade or whatever you have and get yourselves to the captain's cabin! NOW!"

After you are "outfitted" you arrive at the cabin door and knock.

"Enter." comes the captains voice from within.

OCC: IC is yours please describe your character/equipment/rumors one might know about him. And then post them entering the cabin and greeting the captain.

As Captain Veane shouts his orders to the crew Kolto runs long fingers through his coal black hair, sweeping the mass from his eyes and pulling it quickly back into a long ponytail. Hair secured, his yellow eyes scan the crew as his hands compulsively check weapons and equipment - the long, curved blade slung across his back, the warhammer at his waist, longbow, quivers, whip, daggers . . . all in place and ready to hand.

When the Captain singles him out, he's ready; this is what he signed on for, after all. He moves easily across the deck, tall gaunt form rolling fluidly with the swell as he weaves between moving crewmen to the Captain's cabin. He knocks and waits a moment for the expected 'Enter' before tripping the catch and striding through the door. Once inside, he slips into a corner; the shadows embrace him and his charcoal skin fades to near invisibility as he awaits the others' arrival.

Reminding one of some triton from the depths, Tellethel strides across the deck.
From his trident and shield in hand, to the longsword at his side, one can see he is ready for battle. Longtime members of the crew know him at home on ship and sea, under any conditions. It is even rumored during one paticular storm when men were washed overboard, he swam like a fish to rescue them. Hearing the call from the first mate, he makes his way to the captain's cabin, curious of what news awaits. Entering he notes the captain and Kolto in the corner and nods to each, as he settles on the balls of his feet and awaits the arrival of the others.

Tara Everett was a relatively new addition to the crew, and an unusual sight on shipdeck; a young woman. After a long talk with the captain though, and the men still sniggered over what the contents of that talk might have been, she was brought on as a deckhand. She wasn't afraid of hard work and she did her job. She wore an overcoat, even when doing bilges or swabbing, though it must have been ungodly hot, and kept her windblown white hair short as a boy's. The effect of it though was that the crew slowly stopped thinking of her as a woman. Most of the lads called her 'Everett' now, by her last name.

She'd come to the Throaty Mermaid with no one at dock to see her off and just a handful of possessions with only one that seemed particularly valuable...her pistol. It was a thing of beauty, made so that the barrel resembled a dragon's neck with its mouth open wide around the hole at the end. Every scrape on every scale was there in blue lacquer, and it was inlaid with a strange silver metal that reflected little rainbows when light hit it. Wisely, she didn't show it off casually.

It was tucked in her sash though when she came to heed the captain's call. She ducked in through the door the way she always did...quietly and unobtrusively; the manner of one who preferred not to be noticed. She then nodded at Kolto (though it took her a moment and some squinting to find him) and Tellethel, acknowledging them without actually engaging with them, and leaned back against the wall to wait on what the captain's orders were.
