The new Weapons rules allow some good ol' gladiatorial gaming, with everybody's favourite, the retiarius.

Any character with Weapon Mastery and Extra Attack (so a level 5 fighter or barbarian) can now fight effectively with a Net and Trident in D&D.

Let's assume level 5, 16 Str 14 Dex:
  • a) Attack with Net at more than 5-15' away: Opponent makes DC 13 Dex saving throw or is Restrained. Speed = 0, disadvantage on its attacks and dex saves, and advantage on attacks against it.
  • b) move to attack with trident 5-20' away: +6 to hit with advantage, 1d8+5 damage (includes Rage or Duelling fighting style), creature needs to make DC 14 Con save or is toppled (Prone). Can't stand up.

(Attacking with trident first also works if you already have advantage for some reason, such as Heroic Advantage).

EDIT: If the first net attack misses, you can advance and pick it up for free (cf. Glossary s.v. Attack, Equipping and Unequipping Weapons. Okay, technically, the net isn't a weapon, though, but the same rule applies to Interacting with one object (PHB 190).
