Speaking of property destruction, those playing 3.0 should consider an energy substitution (sonic) fireball with energy amixture (sonic). 20d6 sonic damage will take out a good many structures.
Otherwise, add my vote the the no expansion, to heck with logic, and what do you mean by 'realism' votes.
On the expansion question, why does this keep coming up for only fireball (answering my own question: 1st & maybe 2nd edition)? Gltterdust and Evard's Black Tentacles are both spread effects, but I have never seen anyone ask if it expands in confined spaces. Remember which edition you are playing, reread the magic section, and play on already!
