old Red dragon D&D -how to slay?

I don't really see more ideas. The Frightening presence of the dragon: He can suppress it and activate it as a free action... so if he wants visitors, they won't run away (perhaps they want... but that's another matter).

Trading something with the dragon is an idea... perhaps he wants to send you on an errant to get something for him? Sounds like a typical beginner DM plothook.

If that's not the case, make sure the dragon wins against BOTH archmages. In the best case: help him.

I say run far and fast to a foreign land to new and exotic adventures.
Gain lots of levels and magic items and coms back with a vengance.
Kick some Mage A%% when you get back...

So what if it messes up the DM's plot , he put you in a no-win situation.
If he gives you choices A & B ,be creative and make-up C.
