One thing to avoid in DDN

One thing we need to avoid in DDN is rift style magic. For those of you who havnt played rift, all the magic does is change things in the world, but most of it does no damage at all. The magic was designed for you to help the other members of your party while you do nothing else. "fighters" get all the glory while casters did virtually nothing.

even the damage the casters did do was nothing compared to the rest of the characters.

Given there has never been a point in the history of D&D this has ever been an issue, and given the DDN playtest already includes multiple examples of destructive magic for both clerics and wizards... why would you think there was even a tiny possibility something like this would happen?

Basically...THIS.

Magic has traditionally almost always been superior to well, everything else.

Based on that description, one thing DDN needs to support is RIFTS-style magic*. I am so bloody sick of 4E trying to force all wizards to be blasters. I like to play the puppet master who controls the fight with illusions and mind control and debuffs, and then sits in the tavern afterward listening to the fighters boast about their glorious deeds with a small, amused smile.

There will be blasting magic in D&DN. That is beyond dispute. Wizards in D&D have always had blasting and will always have blasting. But we need other options too.

*Although in general I would not want to endorse the inclusion of any mechanics from RIFTS. Dear Glasya, what a mess of a system...
