OotS #658 is up!

That's it, I'm saving every O-chul strip there is. If I ever have a player wondering how to play a paladin, there really isn't a better answer. If he dies, the gods themselves will escort him home.

My favorite part of the entire strip is the very last panel... How Vaarsuvius obviously isn't concentrating on the familiar, and it popping into existence despite V's indifference. It really sells the whole idea of the familiar "always" being there, but really only when its useful.

O-Chul is, in fact, the Man. I mean, seriously. Here is a guy who has never lost sight of his goal or what it might cost him to accomplish that. So, so incredible.

Hats off to Rich Burlew for making an unswerving, hardline good guy into such a likable character.

Damn.

I do have to say, those healing potions must have been some strong stuff - three potions granting enough hit points to soak a meteor swarm? Even though he didn't take direct hits from this one, that's 24d6 fire damage, and I have a hard time believing O-Chul can make Xykon's Reflex save - with no save-boosting items, yet.

Likewise, V has (or rather, had) a lot more hit points than I would have expected. Although V might at least be wearing something that grants fire resist. Fire resistance is an excellent defense against 3.5E meteor swarm, since it's effectively quadrupled (it counts against each individual meteor). Maybe O-Chul has some kind of resistance-granting feat?

And I think we are about to see Blackie's Crowning Moment of Awesome. (Pity it's also likely to be Blackie's tragic demise, but Rich did say in "War and PCs" that one of the party members would pay a heavy cost to reunite the Order of the Stick...)

Does the Raven have to die? Can't it just fly over the rift, let go of the holy symbol, and let sweet gravity do its thing? I guess Xykon could ready an action to mage hand it in that case...

I just don't see the bird doing this, after the previous run-ins with V. In any case, totally called their only chance being a plot device. And even if they both saved on that spell, "dramatic moment" clearly causes the enactors to recieve a free cure critical wounds or similar, to surivive that.

I think most people are assuming the bird's death will be at Xykon's hands, not the Snarl's. The question will be when Xykon notices it: before or after the bird is above the rift?

I wish someone payed Rich Burlew enough money, so that these updates were daily.
Oh, do I miss the days when I started reading OotS, and it was already on its episode #600+. I had so much to look forward to, and so little to wait... :p

No way is Xykon going to lose his phylactery like this. I'm thinking it's going to be used as a bargaining chip for V's freedom (probably not O'Chul's, though).

Chucking Xykon's Phylactery into the Snarl's Rift?

That one-ups my prior suggestion of dumping it in the Silver Sea on the first layer of Heaven. It's been well established that anything that goes in there is utterly unmade, erased, beyond recovery by any known magic or force.

That's gonna really cheese off Xykon, that's for sure.

V used to always have Feather Fall in memory, guess when he renewed his spells when he got the Soul Splices he figured such an ostensibly combat-weak spell wouldn't be worth it since he was off to kill dragons and liches and stuff.

Another little lesson in humility for V, even the "little spells" can be really useful sometime?

As for surviving another round of meteor swarms, natural 20's on saves happen, natural 1's on attack rolls happen, and V could very plausibly have fire resist items (or an SR item), is there some kind of feat that O'Chul could have to give him SR. Maybe some homebrew Exalted Feat that gives him SR or Fire Resistance vs spells cast by evil beings or something? O'Chul is definitely an ideal Paladin, and him having Exalted feats is perfectly plausible. If Redcloak and Xykon can raid the BoVD for ideas (during the Battle of Azure City), the Sapphire Guard can have Exalted material.

Money isn't the issue here. Rich has a diease that (though non-fatel) keeps him down for days at a time.
