I rented it a month or so ago just because I usually like Michael Cain's work. It was a much better movie than I anticipated. I could not get it out of my head, though, that the Marquis reminded me of James Woods even though I knew it was not him. Anyone else think that?

A great cast, great story, great historical fiction, though it has little to do with the reality of the Marquis, choosing instead to portray him as the ACLU's "ultimate poster boy for free speech"

I found it funny that a movie against censorship had to indeed censor the reality of the Marquis, spinning events to portray him in a more favorable light. How ironic, eh?

LOL. He did look a bit like James Woods now that you mention it!

And yes, it is ironic how they had to drastically alter the real life of the true Marquis to make the "fantasy" version work as a sympathetic character. He wasn't portrayed as being very sympathetic in the A&E Biography special, though I do not think his books should have been banned, and he "got the shaft" there.
