My favorite battle, was with the gnolls, and the "Thing" in the claw valley.

The assumption has been made that the single man can return through wilderness(shown to be quite dangerous) back to make his report. Otherwise, if the man and the report both make it back intact, the odds are improved that:

-The letter will be given some credence given the man's report
-Another larger force will not be sent to look for the missing earlier force
