Passing the time...how do you do it?

Ok, now back to the OP.

There are also systems, like Ars Magica and Pendedragon, were crucial events take place in between adventures. Whole subsystems exist to research magic and manage your domains.

In old-timey D&D campaigns players might to do the samething, though the rules guidelines here were pretty light, and it was mostly up to the DM.

This leads to the following questions for the OP, maybe he will check back in on this thread?

-Why do you want players to take downtime? Is it to get time passing, have a life outside of the dungeon, actively manage resources, something else?

-Why should the players take the downtime? Is there a benefit or mechanical need (throug your house rule)? Are there costs?? (if players find downtime expensive, they tend to try to not do it). Is it enough to just hand waive it once in a while?

-Why do you want to disrupt this (charts of random events)?
