PC jail break - need advice

First Post
Had a game on Saturday, finally after like a 2 month down time and I'm having a problem that I'm hoping you might be able to give me some insight into.

Meet the players:
Bones: a 3rd level LN Fighter
Irashtor: a 4th level LN cleric of WeeJas who aspires to become a Monk at 8th level
Kessa: a CG 3rd level bard/1st level Mont Sorceress who aspires to become a Virtuoso

Here's the situation:
The PCs were hired, and paid extra to keep it quiet, by the new captian of the guard, who they know farely well, to find a murderer who had killed several people before grusomely murdering an elderly gentleman in his home. Through some investigating, and after being threatened to stop or else by an evil NPC, they managed to find a base of operations. After defeating one of the key evil NPCs, they were inturupted by a child looking for mom so he could get more pies to sell. (Got this idea in one of the story hours, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one. Very good by the way)

The first thing the kids sees is the bloody cleric and bloody bard followed by the bloody fighter who blocks the kids view of the dead body. After unsuccessfully trying to calm the kid down, the cleric stepped in, to allow the boy inside the building. Once he got inside, he saw the dead body lying on the floor and he about ran away except the cleric grapped him.

After a bit the kid managed to escape and run into the street. The cleric and the bard chased after him, while the fighter remained behind to search the room and make sure no one else enters.

The bard and cleric manage to follow the kid, who ran to a guard and told him what he saw. After a brief conversation, the guard then had the two PCs put on manacles and was escorted to jail, with the kid in tow.

While in the cell, they asked to see the captain of the guard who would vouch that they were working for him.

Through out all of that, the fighter cleaned up and after searching, went to report to the captian of the guard, who then went with the PC to the scene. They looked around a bit, trying to find any other clues, but were unsuccessful and returned.

Mean while, the cleric breaks the cot (I saw no reason for it other than being locked up) while they both plan a jail break. Using a piece from the broken cot, as well as the blanket on it, the managed to bend the bars and escape to return to their rooms within the keep, next to the barricks.

Some information:
- The PCs are fairly popular with the Captian of the Guard as well as the Lady Hope, the ruler, for rescuing her.
- The town guards are mostly new recuits, about 95% are new, with the older ones training the newer ones.
- The person playing the cleric, wether in character or not, I'm not sure which, said that he will not remain in jail for something that he did not do.
- The captain of the guards gave orders not to be disturbed
- The fighter player mentioned, after the game, that he will be turning the other two in, in the morning
- It was late afternoon when they started chasing the kid through the city
- The PCs are not recognized through-out the city as heros
- They ran through the streets covered in blood, scarring townsfolk and alerting them to something that was suppose to be kept secret
- By getting arrested and not preventing birth of a certain child, who was delieverd that night, they managed to release a vile demon who has the ability to become a god. (this I might, and probably will exclude and just extend the date of birth a few days, though no more than a week)
(If I remember anything else of importance I'll list it here)

What I need help with:
Aside from the long list of problems that I have, I need to know what you think the Captain of the Guard should do to the two escaped PCs, as well as any other info or suggestions you might have.

Thanks a bunch,
Akhkharu

Seems simple enough

The Captain could have the PCs arrested for ''Escaping from Detention'', chew them over for revealing that they were working for him, then let them off as ''not guilty'' of the murder which he, himself, investigated.

If you want the adventure to continue, have the Captain remind them to keep it a secret, and wonder if they're stupid. If you don't want it to continue, have the guardsmen escort them out of town.

I agree -- I think a good chewing-out is in order, but not much more. The captain certainly won't hire these yahoos to do any more work for him, and he should make it very clear to them why not. Nobody's above the law, according to the Captain, and the guards that arrested the PCs did so lawfully.

Out of character, talk with your players about alignment. This doesn't exactly sound like a lawful group to me; they either need to define what code they follow that permits such shenanigans, or they need to consider some alignment changes, or they need to behave in a more lawful fashion in the future. You may also want to suggest to them that working within the law can be a fun part of the game, presenting a whole new set of challenges to the discriminating PC.

i agree..these guys were FAR from behaving in a lawful manner. I think changing that alignment a tad and a good azz chewing is in order..
