Perception Skill Check

When a character does a perception skill check, how long does the skill check last for?

For example, a PC does a perception to see if he notices anything in the room. Does the check go away when he leaves the room and enters the next or is there a time limit?

It remains but he can always take another check as a minor action at any time.

It's my understanding that a Perception check doesn't stick around at all, it's an instantaneous thing. Stealth checks last until you stop being hidden, and Perception checks are made against the standing Stealth roll; but each Perception check is a single attempt to see something. Your passive Perception is your persistent value.
