Pitford: Gateway to the Ruins review

Not far from one of the giant ruins in the world lies the town of Pitford. This town lays out on the scarred plains like a massive steel beast offering excavators food, lodging and supplies that they will need to go out back into the wastes. Will your heroes find what they need in the town of Pitford or will they just be another corpse bleached in the sun right outside its walls?

Pitford is a new supplement for the Mutant Epoch game system which covers this town in fine detail. Everything is covered from top to bottom as chapters illustrate the defenses, shops , streets and even basement of this massive steel town. Some of the businesses are quite unique as they stray from the normal weapon shops (which there are a few). But there are also places to rest, places to eat (complete with what’s on the menu) and places to relax (ranging from brothels to a casino).

There are also some unique businesses offering services such as robotics (and a table to generate unique robots), a parcel service (and a glimpse of the world beyond Pitford’s walls) and even a guide service (where characters can hire a guide to go on expeditions into the wastes). Each of these shops is depicted in great detail as to what the character is selling, their personality and what they might have in value stashed behind the counter. There is even a fighting pit in Pitford that allows the characters to try their hand at being a gladiator and there are a few combatants they will be engaging. From just normal folks to mutants and beasts there is no shortage of opponents for the arena.

The basement is where few people dare to tread but where some of the inhabitants of Pitford make a living. There is a constant feeling of being on edge as there are detachments of watchmen guarding areas. From places such as the deep hole to an oily pool that seems to go on forever there are plenty of places to keep the PC’s on their toes.

Pitford may be an armored town but it is not without it’s fortifications to withstand attacks from mutants and creatures. Covered in detail is the town’s defenses which range from simple weaponry (such as catapults and trebuchets) to modern and relic weapons (such as laser cannons, machine guns and even a howitzer!).

Spread throughout the book are tables that can be used for everything including encounters in the night if the PC’s stay at an establishment to encounter tables in and around the town of Pitford. This definitely brings a unique and interesting element as you could run a campaign based in this town. And there are also some adventure hooks which range from the town being under siege to a beast in the basement. Needless to say that these are only some of the ideas that you could come up with to add spice to your campaign.

There are some problems with this book but they are very minor as there is no price for the compound crossbow on page 33 for honest al’s relic emporium. Also there is a hint not to kill off a character named Fox Blender because he takes part in an adventure called Blood Road. But this adventure isn’t in the book nor is there any hint of it on the website. I guess it is a product that will be coming out soon? The art in this supplement is lavish sporting a full painted cover as well as some great interior illustrations. There are also some maps at the back of the book to give the GM and players some depth of just how big Pitford really is.

Pitford gateway to the ruins is available now from outland arts as well as other sites like drive thru rpg. The PDF version will run you around $10.99 and the printed version is $24.99 and both are very reasonable for the amount of content and information that you get in this book. All I can say is if you are looking to run a Mutant Epoch campaign you will need this book as it not holds a wealth of information about the town of Pitford but some insight to the surrounding areas as well. For more information on Pitford and other Mutant Epoch products go to http://www.outlandarts.com/mutantepoch.htm and get ready to explore the town of Pitford.
