About Marvel’s Earth 616; the earliest versions of the book of revelation give the number of the beast as 616. That’s because the Romans weren’t the only culture to use letters as numerals, and the name ‘Nero Caesar‘ adds up to a different number depending on the letter-numerals the author used. i think it was the translation from Aramaic to Greek which changed the number the first time, but when translated to Latin, the numerals didn’t change again and were thereafter left at 666. The whole thing was an anti-Rome political polemic, so it makes sense that the scribes who understood that might not want to update the calculation and get executed for it.

Alan Moore was writing the series where it was named and, well, being Alan Moore he was grumpy at his publisher and took out some petty revenge.

Ah well, I think it’s hilarious. Because proponents of a moral panic don’t actually read or otherwise know the media they attack, the anti-comics nutters don’t seem to have noticed the 616 thing. It’s kinda like how the anti-D&D satanic panic crap never seemed to notice that the ideal stat roll was three sixes.
