The time is now 7:39am.

"Well, we'd better hurry then, eh?" The car smoothly pulls out into traffic. It eases through the airport traffic lanes and out past the exit gates. Suddenly, instantly, the car shouts for joy as it hurtles northward along Highway 101, bobbing and weaving between the morning commuters like a dolphin amongst a school of fish. An eyeblink later, and Slate pulls into an innocuous parking garage in the middle of downtown San Fransisco. He parks the car in a "Reserved" space on the bottom-most level, far below street level.

Slate glances through the rearview mirror at Jameson sitting in the back seat, "And please, don't call me 'Slatey'."

The car's dashboard clock reads 7:50 am.

Matthaniel steps out of the car looking a little shakey, he clutches his laptop to him like a mother with a particularily fragile baby.

"Wooh, thanks Sla... ermm.. Mr.Slate... What should I call you all then.. Can't go around calling you "Mr." this and "Mr." that!"

Matthaniel seems to check out his surroundings for the first time.. He seems confused to be in such an unmarked area of town...

"Well, it's not exactly MI5.. Are you sure we're in the right place?"

Serial 1; Mission Briefing.

The garage you have parked in is about one block from the office building. The directory in the lobby indicated that Mr. Green (Green Consultants, Inc.) has offices on the fourth floor. The building also hosts a law firm (Rogers, Rogers, Fairchild, and Jordan) on the fifth, sixth, and seventh (top) floors; an insurance company (State Farm) on floor one; and a variety of small firms on floors two and three (JBS Fabrics; Anderson, Robert H. and Assocs., Inc – Engineers; Kearney, Anne – MS LCPC; Key Resources – Editorial Services; Steven W. Smunt, D.D.S. Ltd. – General Dentistry; and Jillian Born – Wedding Coordinator/Thomas Born - Photographer).

You ride the elevator up to the fourth floor and enter Mr. Green’s office. The receptionist is on the phone, and typing information of some kind into a computer, he looks up at you briefly, and says “Go on in, gentlemen, Mr. Green is expecting you.”

Mr. Green’s office has a lovely view of another office tower; it looks like at one time it was a stunning view of the Bay. One wall is made up of a large picture window. There is a desk on one side of the window (facing away from it), and a grouping of couches and chairs on the other side of the office. A slightly chubby man in a black suit is seated at the desk, he has a manila folder – open – in front of him and is reading from a document. He closes the folder as you enter the room, walks toward you with his right hand extended. He is short, about 5’7” has piercing blue eyes, and is bald. He is wearing a dark blue tie and has a dark blue kerchief in the breast pocket of his suit. He shakes hands all around and gestures toward the casual seating area. “Please come in and have a seat.

"Good morning, sir. How are you this fine Monday?" asks Indy, smiling. "We came straight-away from the airport. Interesting happenings for us?" as he takes one of the available chairs.

As Matthaniel enters the large office his eyes finally light up at the recognition of a man with taste. He immediately takes the unlit cigarette out of his mouth and clumsily shoves it into his pocket as Mr.Green comes to shake his hand.

"Hi, I'm Jameson, ermm, you must be Mr.Green. I feel kinda outta place here without a colourful name."

Matthaniel's attempt at a joke falls flat on its face, he makes a mental note to stop making them when he's nervous...

"I'm guessing you need me for some kind of computer work?"

A man stands from his position in a high-backed chair which is facing the desk, masking his presence until now. He is wearing a black suit, or maybe charcoal, it's hard to tell with a conservative tie. He turns to you, smiles warmly and says, "Ah, hello there. I am Mr. Gold.." He offers to shake each of your hands, then motions at the other chairs and sits back down.

"Good morning, Agent Green."

Out of habit Conrad gives a small bow to Green after the shake-hands, doing the same when greeting Mr. Gold.

When taking a seat, he struggles for a short while before giving up and assuming a proper western sitting position to cope with the form of the chair.

* (Sigh!) The agency's choice of chairs still leaves much to be desired. I wish they'd reconsider that some day. *

Conrad leans back expectantly, putting his fingers together in front of his chest, ready to commence going through the finger-knitting symbols, as it is his wont.

Serial 1; Mission Briefing.

Mr. Green leans out of his office door and says "No interruptions, please.” To his secretary. He pulls the door closed and snicks the lock shut, then picks up a cup and pours himself coffee from the thermos jug sitting on the small table next to the door. He sits on one of the couches in the ‘conversation area’ of his office and waits for the five of you to settle yourselves. He seems to be very ordinary until he begins to speak, but his speaking voice is extraordinarily captivating and you find yourself drawn to him as he begins your briefing.

“I don’t believe that any of you have met before, but you’re all top men in your chosen fields and have been highly recommended to me by your superior officers. I’m putting together a team to investigate a series of disappearances that seem to be related. The most recent victim was an agent who was involved in an undercover investigation of a related case. At this point we are uncertain if she was a random target or if her cover was compromised.”

He pauses to sip from his cup. “We have isolated five cases, all taking place in the last six months, all located in San Francisco. The first disappearance was just over five months ago. Beth Calandra, a local politician, she went jogging one morning with her dog and has not been seen since. Her dog; however, was found dead in a park near her home. Ms. Calandra’s family continues to believe that she has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom, no notes or calls have been received at this time. About three months ago Dr. Robert Yoult missed several appointments, his receptionist called to attempt to file a missing person’s report on him but was unable to because of the 24-hour time limit. Shortly after her call, Dr. Yoult’s car was found abandoned just north of the US/Mexico border. Six weeks ago, an SFPD officer, Pat MacDuff, called in a report of ‘shots fired, officer down.’ His partner, James St. Claire, had been shot during a routine traffic violation. After checking on St. Claire – who had been shot in the leg but seemed to be stable – MacDuff chased the suspect. When the ambulance arrived the technicians were unable to locate Mr. St. Claire, there has been an extensive search but no trace of the police officer has been found.”

Another pause for coffee. “Two weeks ago Megan Rossini left a day early for a vacation, she neglected to take her luggage, vehicle, or bodyguard. Ms. Rossini was a model who had acted occasionally and had planned on leaving town to avoid a fan-stalker that was making her increasingly nervous. We have not been able to contact Ms. Rossini or the alleged stalker. Two days ago, one of our agents failed to report at a scheduled drop. She also missed the secondary location and had made no calls to the emergency line set up for her. The name she was traveling under was Greta Burges, she had been on tour as an opera singer and had shows in the San Francisco area for the last three weeks. She had also been reported missing by her assistant, Ben Thomas, the SFPD found a suicide note in her hotel room and a small quantity of blood, but nothing else.

“Ms. Burges was in the possession of an information disk that has not been located.” He pauses, and looks each of you in the eye for a brief moment. “That disk needs to be recovered. Your other objectives are to locate Ms. Burges, Ms. Calandra, Ms. Rossini, Mr. St. Claire, and Dr. Yoult. Do you have any questions at this point?”
