You know, it doesn't actually say anywhere that the humanoid torso is the same size as a person. And if you look at the picture in the MM, the dude's arms are about the size of the horsey forelegs. Horses' legs are big and very very strong. Maybe they got it right? </occam's>

Even if the Centaur is incredibly strong, there is a difference between a Human in Full Plate trying to climb a vertical Wall, using both arms and legs and a quadrupedal using arms and hoves.
A Centaur weights about 2.100 pounds. Subtract 300 pounds for the weight a very big Human and apply the rest 1.800 pounds as carried weight in the case of climbing a wall.
Give a negative circumstance modifier for his unsuitable shape for climbing and you are there.
On the other Hand, jumping on a ledge or jumping down. Running up a steep stair and other such activities should get a circumstance bonus. Overrun and Bullrush dito.
And the centaur should be able to initiate a charge with a lance.

Circumstance modifiers stack so nicely.

Jumping: The do have a +8 due to their horsey speed.

Overrun and Bullrush; +4 Size modifier

The can already charge as if mounted.

Running downstairs should be risky IMHO.

Circumstantial evidence suggests the torso is treated as Large, considering a centaur weilds Large weapons, which humans can't normally do.

Or just go the Savage Species (racial class progression) route.

That way, you can start the character at 1st, 2nd, 3rd or whatever you like, they get to level up with the others, and (theoretically) it'll all be well-balanced. (-ish) :)
Oops, usually I am one to advocate that book, but I forgot

And, yeah, Nice catch Beckett :D
