You don't always need the setting books to play in a game. I have been in a few where I don't have them. If there is a game that catches your fancy, just drop in and ask in the OOC thread.
Whizzbang: I would agree with the others; you don't really need to know any more than the basic SRD material to get started. I pretty much ignored most of it until I started GM'ing.
