Questions about scrolls...

Amazing Mumford

Hey there, I have a few questions about scrolls.

1) When a wizard scribes a scroll, is it automatically at it's lowest level or can the wizard decide what the CL is for the scroll? For example, a 5th-level wizard scribes magic missile, is it as a CL 1 spell with 1 missile or can the wizard choose to have it as a CL 5 with 3 missiles? If scribed at a higher CL, how does it affect the cost to make the scroll? If a wizard scribes scrolls to sell, is the CL 5 magic missile going to sell for more than the CL 1? How does this work??

2) I know wizards can't cast from divine scrolls, and so they can't copy cleric spells to their spellbook even if the spell is a both sor/wiz and clr spell. But can wizards cast from/copy bard spells or wu jen spells on scrolls, and vice-versa? If a wu jen scribes a scroll with a spell that is also on the wizard's spell list, can a wizard copy it into his/her spellbook?

Thanks for the help!

When a caster makes a disposable magic item, they chose the caster level they want. Minimum is the lowest level they can cast the spell at. Maximum is the their own caster level. Potions, scrolls and wands usually use the lowest level because it is the cheapest to make and the price rise very quickly.

Spell Level X Caster Level X 25gp = Scroll Market price
Spell Level X Caster Level X 50gp = Potion Market price
Spell Level X Caster Level X 750gp = Wand Market price

Cost to make is 1/2 market price in Gold Pieces and 1/25 the maket price in Experience Points of the item creator.

As long as the scroll is arcane and on the wizard spell list, i think so. Note the wizard is learning the spell at the spell level it appears on the wizard's spell list.

1) Yes, of course. You can make a scroll at your CL or as low as the lowest level caster of your class could cast the spell.

2) Of course, use the item crafting cost rules which include CL and SL in the formula.

3) Yes. You can copy any spell into your spellbook at YOUR level if it exists on your class spell list and is the same type of scroll as you cast (Arcane vs Divine.) For instance, a 1st level Bard scroll of a 2nd level Wizard spell would be copied as a 2nd level Wizard spell into your spellbook at the cost of a 2nd level spell copying despite being a scroll of a 1st level spell.

3) for completeness: note that this is NOT the case for scrolls created by Artificers (Eberron class), since they are considered neither arcane nor divine.

Also note that when created the spell must be at least at teh minimum caster level required to cast the spell.

So no 1 HD fireballs for wizards.

And because of this rule - paladins (and rangers) are never CL 1 since they start at CL 2 (1/2 their class level)

From the SRD
Through 3rd level, a paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, her caster level is one-half her paladin level.
