Quick and dirty Maximize+Empower

Playing an epic arcanist mean rolling a truckload of dices.

While fun, it tend to slow down gameplay.

Since I often Maximize and Empower my spells, my DM came up with a quick solution: you take the Maximized damage and multiply it by 1.25. 1.25 represent an average roll of 50% of the dices.

So, for example: spell do 30d6... Max is 180*1.25 for Emp for a total of 225.

The solution in the ELH is more accurate, yours is probably a bit faster.

It notes that as you roll truckloads of dice, they tend to average out, and then notes how they average. The average of Nd6 isn't N*3, it's N*3.5.

On 30d6, average is 105, for an value on empowerment of 52.5. Maximized gives 180, as you note.

Total damage for a maximized and empowered 30d6 is 232.5, so you're losing about 7.5 damage on average, or .25 hp/die. Not worth worrying about, probably, but if you wanted to be more accurate, you could say:

(average value for maximized + empowered XdY) = X*(5Y+1)/4

Speed was the main issue.

And when you're playing epic, 7 point don't really matters :)

Thanks for the accurate formula.
