rain the pain, best area spells/powers/classes

Trying to help a fellow player make pc that damages large areas. He has always played fighter/rogue based pc's and is switching rolls with the player that usually plays a spell slinger type. Neither are going to help the other with the build, being very competetive. So he asked me for advice on what to pick. I am no where near optimal with building spell casters, but know enough to ask on this site.

He's interested in causing damage to large areas. He told me Psion, Warmage, Wizard, Sorcerer any prestige class...in his words "its all good" = he is willing to consider all. He wants big mass damaging ability to be his cornerstone of pc, any help advice with this will be, as usuall, very appreciated.

If you must blast, use Psion. In terms of power, however, you're better off using solid battlefield control.

And if you must blast with Psions, and you dig the Kineticist , check out "Energy Missiles" for some mildly cheesy goodness.

see I would of suggested Sorcerer but the the 10d6 limit on a lot of stuff really handicapps the big boomers. Psion Keneticist, OK I like it for what he wants. As far as the pyrokenetic flame guy??/did one of you suggest that? wheres the big boom there? well 1 time a day 30' radius, right?

What about warmage? Isnt this suppose to be their specialty? Are they gimped in comparison to the Psion?

For blasting Psionics are where it's at.

For this type of build i like Wilders a lot. They get less powers known but they powers they have they can over clock to bump up the manifester level.

I also like the class features Wilder has.

Psion can definitely be cheesed out to be way more powerful but in a more controlled game Wilders run well right out of the box.

Also for an Evil game a CE Wilder with a penchant for blowing things up just sounds like fun.

1. Sorcerer may be able to do it better, but I have neither the time, energy, or inclination to explain how.
2. Kineticist and Pyrokineticist are different things.
3. Warmage is horribly gimped, yes.

1 metamagic
2 I know thats why I was saying wheres the big boom with this class. The fire lash is kinda cool, and I even thought the flameing foot print added a superhero/villian vibe
3 That sucks about warmage, I thought this is what they do, I liked the idea of the class, too bad.

I'd say build a Sorcerer based on the 4th level spell Wings of Flurry. Uncapped non-energy area damage, with a save-or-spend-a-round-scratching-your-bum rider effect? Sign me up. At 4th level, this spell can still be metamagicked to hell and back. Sculpt, Empower, Quicken, and Twin are the biggies here, as well as anything that boosts your effective caster level. Incantatrix and Halruaan Elder will be interesting Prestige Classes to look at, and definitely get either the Rapid Metamagic Feat or the Metamagic Specialist Sorcerer variant. Other feats you might need include Arcane Thesis, Easy Metamagic, and Practical Metamagic.

Oh, and put it on a Dragonwrought Kobold, obviously.

Our player thats taking the "blaster" build has voted on Wilder, his reasoning, was almost word for word your above related quote! And psionics over Arcane because the Psionic powers come with 4 choices as to type, fire, cold, sonic or electric, if this was a spell it would be 4 seperate spells, that and the augmentable powers and psi meta feats are easy, and both these meld well with the extremenly limited power list of the wilder.
