Ranger detailed tracking rules

After seeing The Two Towers and seeing how Aragorn was able to find out a lot of information in his tracking skills our group got to wondering: Is there any advanced tracking rules available? Is Dragon 303 they had rules for advanced haggling...so we were wondering if there is anything similar for tracking. Such that - on a certain amount you can tell how many in the party, etc....

Anyone?

Well, it doesn't have to be a house rule, we can use existing rules to get an answer.

The PHB gives the guidelines for finding the DC of the Wilderness Lore roll using the Track feat.

Using the "Degrees of sucess" rules in the DMG pg 91 with Table 3-20: Varying Degrees of Success, we can see that by beating the DC of the roll by 10 or 20 gives greater and perfect sucess (in this case more info).

So (using your example of Aragorn in TTT):

PHB Tracking DC:

Firm Ground - base DC 15
Small creature - +1 DC
Group of 2 - no bonus/negative
Per 24 hours - +1 (IIRC, they were a day behind)
Party hides their trail - +5 (I would use this to simulate the disturbance of the tracks by the orcs during the battle with the Riders of Rohan)

So the DC adds up to 15+1+1+5=22
If Aragorn rolled a 22 - Just finds the tracks and can follow
If Aragorn rolled a 32 - Finds the tracks and can follow. Knows a little more than the base roll (maybe finds the cut ropes, etc).
If Aragorn rolled a 42 - Everything we see in the movie, he knows everything almost like he was there.

Considering (without magic or stat bonuses) that Aragorn would have to have 22 ranks of Wilderness Lore (19th level, max skill ranks in class skill is character level+3) and roll a 20 to get this information as fast as he did in the movie, it's not bad.

If we include stat bonuses (say +4 from Wis), and Legolas did an Aid Another action (giving a +2 circumstance mod), then Aragorn would only need 16 ranks of WL (13th level, max skill character level+3) and roll a 20.

Sound right?
