D&D 5E ranger getting caught all of time---What to do?

My son is playing a ranger and keeps getting "caught" or seen when out ranging in the wild. I am not sure our DM is taking into account what the ranger is capable of. He is 3rd level. What route should he take? He should not be getting caught each time he goes out...

You could ask the DM to explain the stealth rules. Not that you are challenging his way of applying them, just so you understand what you are up against.

Third level rangers are no better than 1st-level rangers when it comes to Stealth checks, are they?

It's goofy because the two rogues have never failed a sneak attack or a stealth check. Shouldn't it be relatively the same for a ranger?
No, Rogues have a unique class feature that doubles their proficiency bonus on a couple of their skill checks. If the rogues put that bonus in Stealth, then they should have +2 to Stealth over the ranger, assuming everyone is proficient.

Also, make sure the ranger isn't wearing some sort of armor that would give Disadvantage on Stealth checks. That's the kind of thing that might be easy to overlook.

Once he gets to 5th level he can learn Pass Without Trace, a spell that will solve all your stealth related problems. Alternatively if you play with multiclassing he can take a level of Rogue and get Expertise in stealth. Rogue abilities synergize well with the Ranger, so it's a good class combination.
