New Bakstre rotates rapidly, the sun and seven moons move at visible speed across its purplish sky. The sun sets slowly behind the Regina Cayli, an M-Class Imperial Attack Transport, which casts its long shadow across New Bakstre's twisted vegetation. I study it from my hiding place, a dozen meters distant, shivering slightly in the chill air.

The landing ramp is open, and for the moment, unguarded.

I bolt from cover. My heart is pounding in my ears. I run across the clearing, dash up the ramp, into the dark cargo bay of the Imperial ship....

WHO AM I?

My name is Roark Garnet. I'm what you might call a galactic entrepreneur. I'm the captain of the Dorian Discus, and I was making what you might call an unscheduled delivery on New Bakstre when I ran into that Imperial Attack Transport. What in the seven moons where they doing here? The Empire has no interests this far out in the New Territories. The Emperor seems to be tightening his grip, squeezing out every credit he can from every place possible. Well, that's usually OK with me. That's how I make a living. It's my business knowing how to step around these Imperial entanglements.

But, this time, they caught me by surprise. The cruiser forced me down, and we hit the forest hard. The transport grounded itself not far from our crash point, and a squad of men in white quickly combed the area. They captured Hawk. It looked like they wounded him, too. Hawk Carrow is my co-pilot.

Now, I'll tell you. I don't give two hoots about the Rebellion or the Empire. But, there's not way that I'm going to abandon Hawk to the tender mercies of the Imperial Interrogators.

I trailed them back to their ship, then I bolt from cover....

Star Wars character creation is very easy. You can do it in a hand full of minutes. I'm using the first edition rule set for this adventure, and I'm only using the core rulebook. It's all you need to play a Star Wars game.

Players are given two choices for creating characters in this edition of the rules. The first method is to take an established character template, provided in the core rules, and customize it. The second method is to create your own template first, then customize it for an individual character.

I'm just going to go quickest method--the first one.

I take the Smuggler template. It gives me the character's attributes, starting equipment, and a general background. I can, of course, change anything I want, if the need suits me, to create a totally unique individual.

Once I have selected the template, I am given 7D to distribute among the character's skills (which are listed on the template). This Star Wars game only uses six sided dice. The base throw for each of the skills is that listed for the governing attribute. When improving skills, the dice add to that attribute base.

No skill can gain more than 2D. I'll add 2D to Blaster and 1D to Dodge. I'll add 2D to Starship Piloting. 1D goes to Bargain and another to Brawling. That's 7D. I'm done. I just fill in the character details as I see the character in my mind's eye, and I'm ready to play.

That's how quick you can start Star Wars gaming.

I'm inside!

No one around. Heh, they must be all out looking for me. Now...where would they be keeping you, old buddy? Where....there. That security console. The panel is locked out. Ok...ok...let me see what I can do.

I run my fingers over the screen.

This is a use of the Security skill. But, I didn't improve that skill when I created Roark, so it defaults back to its governor attribute, which is Technical. So, I'm rolling 2D+2.

It's just a simple station lock out code, so the Difficulty is Very Easy. I need a 5+ to succeed.

I roll a total of 12. No problem.

Yeah. I'm in. And, no alarm that I can tell. The monitor says: Prisoner in Infirmary, Command Deck, Room B12.

In another second, I've got the infirmary's security code out of the memory banks. I record it on my comlink. I grab a diagram of the ship, too. I'm sure that will come in handy.

I look at the read-out, and quickly, I find the most direct route. This Imperial tub is bigger than the Discus, but it ain't that big.

Hawk, brother, hold on. I'm comin'.

Water Bob

I see the grav tube across the deck.

But, I also hear approaching footsteps. No one in sight yet. I entered the ship on the loading elevator, just aft of the bow. There's no time. I'm skip across the deck and duck behind some containers.

A stormtrooper walks into the room and stands by the grav tube with his weapon ready. He stands there for several minutes. He must be a guard. Guess I got lucky when I came aboard. I bet he was doing his rounds. Or, maybe a shift change?

Don't know. Don't care. I've just got to get past him. He doesn't look like he's leaving any time soon. The longer I wait here, the more likely I'll be discovered. And...the less likely I'll find Hawk.

I could try to bluff my way past him. I'm not bad at that sort of thing. But, c'mon. Who am I trying to fool? The guard is on high alert. They're LOOKING for ME!

I'm just going to have to run and gun. I'm betting the ship is as deserted as it has seemed so far.

I pull out my blaster. It's heavy in my hand. I take a breath, and I bounce a couple of times on my thighs, gathering my courage.

One...two...three. Then, I'm up, peeking over the containers. Blaster braced. I squeeze the trigger. The weapon explodes with jerk and a blinding flash of super-heated gas. The sound is loud--deafening as it echos in this confined hull.

There are sparks where the plasma bolt hit....

Roark's Blaster skill is 5D+2. Range is less than 7 meters, which is Short Range for a heavy blaster pistol. I need a 10+ to hit. This should be a pretty easy shot.

OH MAN! I'm rolling real dice as I write this. You're not going to BELIEVE this. I throw 5D and get: 2, 2, 2, 1, 1. NO KIDDING! WOW!

But, with the +2 modifier, I've got 10 exactly. I guess Roark was nervous. But he hit, with the minimum number needed.

It catches the trooper on the back of his right shoulder. A piece of dense armor blows off, and the white color is flashed black from the plasma burn. The man twists in a half circle and goes down, face first, on the deck.

I don't even wait to make sure he's no longer moving. If I hesitate, I'm doomed. I've got to get Hawk and get out of here.

I'm around the containers. I step by the downed guard. And, I'm in the lift.

I slam the controls with my thumb. The doors shut. Then, I pull out that thesselbeast's foot I picked up a few stops back from that crazy witch. She said it would keep me safe. I thought it a novelty. Or, did I?

I'm sure wearing it on the outside of my shirt, now.

The grav tube takes me to the upper decks.

The doors slide open to reveal a double blast door. It opens as well. Imperial graphics designate this the Command Deck. A corridor leads right and left. Checking my comlink, I see the infirmary is to the right. To left and across the corridor, I see another pair of open blast doors leading to a darkened room.

I can hear the mechanical voices of troopers to both the right and left. Damn.

They'll have too much control over me here. I'm going for broke. Out of the lift I dash, across the hall. In a flash, I'm in the other room.

I press my back to the bulkhead in the dark. Did they see me? I've still got my blaster out. Now, I've got it clasped with both hands. The comlink, I replaced it on my belt.

I try to control my breathing. I listen.

Two stormtroopers appear just outside of this room. They stop and peer into the dark. One gestures to the other, "Check this room. And, set for stun. The Commander wants this one for questioning."

The trooper giving the orders continues down the hallway. The other steps cautiously into my darkened room....

I can blast this guy or try to hide. Roark knows that most trooper armor does not come with augmented visual equipment. Only specialized troops get the upgrades. Upgrades are expensive, and there are A LOT of stormtroopers in the Empire.

Roark is going to hide. This is a use of his Hide/Sneak skill. I didn't improve this skill when I created Roark, so the skill defaults to the character's Perception code, 3D. Roark knows the average human has 2D Perception, so he knows he's a bit better than average at this sort of thing. Odds are, he can get away with hiding.

As it turns out, the trooper has normal human Perception of 2D and has not improved the Search skill.

In this situation, we make an opposed roll. It's Roark's 3D ability to Hide vs. the trooper's 2D in Search.

I roll 12 for Roark and 5 for the trooper.

The stormtrooper only takes about two steps into the room. He gives it a quick scan, turning his head, and after a moments more hesitation, he turns and steps back out into the corridor, taking a right, following his squad leader.

This is my chance. I give the trooper a few moments to get down the corridor, then I creep out of the room, left, and make my way to the infirmary.

Past the grav tube where I entered this deck, I come to another corner.

I peer around. Down the long passage, I see a lone stormtrooper standing outside the infirmary door. It's a good 40 meters. It would take a hell of a shot.

I rub the thesselbeast foot that's hanging around my neck. No, I don't think my blaster is going to get me out of this one. I holster the big gun. Suck in some air. Screw my face into a displeasured smirk. And, with my chest out, I swagger on down the length of the ship as if I owned the damn thing.

This time, I picked wrong. The trooper was on his toes. As soon as I stepped into the corridor, the Imperial turned towards me, raising his blaster carbine. 40 meters is nothing for a carbine. It's a much longer range weapon than my pistol.

I raised my hands and turned my frown into a smile, like we were good old buds. The trooper didn't hesitate at all. He squeezed the trigger. His carbine flared out a stun cone. And, I went down, wiggling like a little baby.

I don't even remember hitting the deck.

The noise of boots on the deck roused me again. Now, an Imperial officer was standing over me with a squad of stormtroopers. He said, "The Commander will be personally interested in this one, I suspect. He must be a Rebel."

I start to mumble, "I'm not a Rebel...," but that statement is stopped short as one of the troopers kicks me in the ribs. "You two, put him in the infirmary with the other one," the officer continues. "The rest of you, take a look outside and see if there are any others crawling around."

My two escorts drag my not-working body down the corridor. At the infirmary door, they drop me on the deck. One enters the security code while the second one draws the blaster its holster on my leg. Neither of them have no idea that I have regained my faculties.

The one with the pistol seems to be interested in it. He's studying it as if he's evaluating whether he's gained a trophy. He turns his back to me and bends to study the blaster more closely.

This is it. They're careless. This is my chance. I'll never doubt the power of the foot of the thesselbeast again. Slowly. Every so slowly, I try to stand....

This is another Hide/Sneak roll as Roark is trying to stealthily stand behind the two troopers. One has his attention on the door, while the other has turned to study Roark's blaster. Again, I didn't put any dice into Roark's Hide/Sneak skill, so it defaults to his 3D Perception code.

Since the troopers are both distracted and confident that their prisoner is unconscious, this is a Very Easy Difficulty task. I need only a 5+.

I roll 12. Roark stands without the two seeing him.

Now, I'm going to try to do two things at once. Roark is going to try to knock one trooper down while grabbing the blaster rifle from the other. Both actions are a test of the Brawling skill, which I improved to 4D+1 during character generation. But, since I am attempting two actions at the same time, Roark suffers a -1D penalty to both actions. That means I'm rolling 3D+1 for both attempts.

Since the troopers are totally unaware of what Roark is about to do, the difficulty is Easy. But, that's still a 10+ target. On three dice, it's about a 50% chance of success.

Let's see how Roark does.

First, Roark slams his body into the trooper studying his blaster pistol. The roll is: 10 on the money!

Then, quickly darting the other way, Roark grabs for the stormtrooper's rifle as the trooper turns from the infirmary door. The roll is: 12! Yes!

Like a creeper from a horror holo, I rise behind the two men. In a flash of action, I slam into the one on my left and knock him to his knees. Then, I turn to see the other guard turning towards me. I can't see the look on his face because of the helmet, but I know it is locked into a state of surprise. I grab his blaster rifle out of his hands.

I stand there, big smile on my face, darting the rifle back and forth between the two troopers.

"Toss it to me," I say to the trooper that is now on his backside. With a flick of his hand, my blaster pistol skids across the deck to my feet. "And the rifle." That trooper's own blaster rifle follows it.

"Now, down on your knees." This, I say to the one by the door, who had already raised his hands once I grabbed his weapon. I had him go face down, and I stuck my knee in his back, keeping the rifled aimed at the other. I searched through his belt and found some electronic cord-cuffs. These were the fancy kind that allowed for multiple limbs. One could manacle a creature with up to four limbs, cuff two bipeds together, or groggle tie a man with his hands to his feet behind his back. This last option is what I used on the two troopers. Then, I pulled their helmets off.

At the infirmary door, I checked my comlink for the code, then I dragged both troopers inside the room. I retrieved their helmets, and I checked their belts. One of them had a hand comlink. I took it, threw it inside his helmet, and set both helms on the top of a shelf.

Then I pointed the blaster rifle at both of them.

"Nooooo!" One of them yelled, wide eyed.

He hadn't noticed, but I had already set the rifle for stun.

"Night, night." I said. Then, I turned to the medical droid that was floating around in the room.

"Did you alert anyone about what I've done here?" I said to the droid.

"No sir." It's mechanical voice answered.

"Good. Don't. I want you to sedate these two men if your sensors tell you that they are starting to regain consciousness. And, don't relieve their restraints."

The droid floated over to the two trussed stormtroopers and said, plainly, "Yes sir."

The medical bay is not a large room. There's the entry area, where I have the two troopers, then, through a doorway, is the treatment room. I stepped through the hatch to find three medbeds. One of them had Hawk in it. Beyond is another hatch, which is, I assume, the doctor's office.

Hawk is asleep. His left leg is cast in a bone-mender. I hit the switch on the box next to the bed. A mechanical arm detached itself from the wall and pumped my friend with a dose of stimulant. Groggy, my co-pilot opened his eyes.

"Hi, old buddy. Nice place you've got here. The Empire taking good care of you?"

Hawk smiled upon seeing me. He indicated his leg, "Time to check out! But, um, fancy athletics are out of the question."

I spread my hands wide, with a wider smile. "I'll just carry you!"

My friend frowned. "This is not a good plan."

I heaved him out of bed and lifted him over my shoulder. With a grunt, I said, "Everybody's a critic."

And, out of the infirmary Hawk and I went.

Adventurer
"We're just going to stroll out the front hatch?" Hawk grunted as I carried him down the corridor.

"Have you got a better idea?" I answered.

"They'll seal the exits as soon as they find those two troopers back there."

"Yeah," I said as I stopped to catch my breath. "I entered from the lift right around the corner. But, I also shot a trooper getting here. I bet it's no good doubling back. Let me look at the ship's plans on my comlink." I lean against the wall to better brace Hawk, still on my shoulders, then I squirm the comlink off my belt. The device projects a 3-D plot of the ship's decks.

Roark is trying to find the safest way off the ship. His Technical attribute is 2D+1. Since he's got the plans, but is unfamiliar with ship procedure, we'll give him a Easy (10+) check to find the best route. This throw is not on the character's favor.

But, I roll a total of 13! That's the highest I can roll!

"Wait a minute." I say, pretty much to myself, as I study the plans. I touch a control on the comlink, and some round units on the plan turn red. "The escape pods! Nobody will think of that! The ship is grounded. Most of the troops are outside, looking for our non-existent crewmates. They fire from this deck. And, they won't be guarded like the entrances and exits of the ship!"

"Roark," Hawk says to me, slowly, "Man, I don't know about that. Firing an escape pod while a ship is dirtside is asking for disaster."

I smile and shake my head, as I shift Hawk to a better position on my shoulders. "No, brother, it will be great. It'll be a story you can tell the ladies at our next port. We'll pop this tin can, land the pods, and be out of here on the Discus before the Imperials know what has hit them. C'mon. It'll be great!"

A few minutes, and a lot of huffs and puffs later, I sat Hawk down next to the entry to an escape pod. We saw no one on our flight from the infirmary.

Now, what I've got to do is override the escape pods automatics to use manual control in order to launch the pod with the ship grounded.

Piece of cake.

Well, not really. The character does not have a good chance of pulling this off. This is a Difficult task, requiring a 20+ throw. Roark's Starship Piloting skill is as high as I could make it during character generation. It's at 5D+2. So, I've got the best chance to complete this maneuver, but that chance is less than 50/50.

Rorak also has a Force Point. This is a very valuable resource. I don't want to spend it frivolously. But, the character is in a pretty precarious situation. If he fails this maneuver, he could crash and kill himself or get captured. And, getting captured again is probably not going to be easy to make an escape.

So, I'm blowing the Force Point on this throw.

Spending the Force Point means doubling my skill code actions for the combat round.

On this throw, I'm throwing 10D+4, trying to get 20+.

That should greatly improve the odds!

I throw and get a total of 41!. Oh yeah! The Force Is With Me!

THE ENTIRE SHIP ROCKS AS THE ESCAPE POD BLASTS OFF THROUGH THE UPPER HULL!

Inside, Hawk yells out like a Denarian horned bat. But, we're not out of the clear yet. My behind is stuck to the seat, the G-Forces holding me firm as I sweat and struggle to control this baby.

These pods were not designed for in-atmosphere take off, much less a launch from a grounded vessel. If I don't gain control, we're going to slam right into New Bakstre's crust.

But...I....I....yes. I manage to get the thing flipped around. We're in controlled decent, now. I look over at Hawk and smile.

He grins back, nothing but white teeth gleaming at me.

A minute later, I've put her down about two kilometers away, not too far from the Dorian Discus.

"Nice work, Ace." Hawk says.

I scramble and get Hawk aboard our own ship. I slide him into his co-pilot seat so that he can do the launch prep. "Hey man," he says, "I've got incoming on the scope. Coming through the forest from the direction of the transport. I bet its troopers on speederbikes.

"Alright," I tell him as I make my way to my seat in the cockpit, "forget the prep. Let's get her cold started and in orbit as fast as possible."

Hawk shakes his head in agreement, "That's fine, but the Regina Cayli carries four outboard TIE fighters. You can bet the Imps left them in oribit. That's standard procedure for a vessel like that."

I know he's right. "You're going to have to stay here pilot the ship. Get us out to jump point as fast as you can. I'll get up in the gun turret."

"It's not over yet."

THE VOID TERROR

For this new adventure, my character is Lady Selnia Harbright. She's an ex-senator, and her adventure will bring her into contact with Roark Garnet, the hero from the first scenario described above.

Just as before, character creation is quick. I pick the Young Senatorial template, which already has the character's stats, and I add 7D in skills to customize the template. I'll put a die each into Blaster and Dodge. Another die goes into Planetary Systems. I'll put one into Starship Gunnery. Two go into Command and Con. And, the last one goes into Brawling. All done. Let's play!

For three centuries my family served the Republic and my homeworld, Salliche. Our people are loyal, but since the Empire has been established, we have become troubled. As a Senator, I've tried to hold the Emperor to his promise to promote the public good, but my pleas have been answered with disappointment. I am reluctant to trn agains the galactic government. My family, generations ago, helped to establish it. But, I have no choice. The Empire has truly become a tyranny. Salliche is now occupied by Imperial troops.

If civilization is to be saved, I must act NOW!

I will help the Rebellion as once my ancestors helped establish the Republic.

DATA FILE: SALLICHE

latest

Salliche is the crown jewel of the Ag Circuit, which provides the Core Worlds, including Coruscant, with enough food to sustain their many billions of inhabitants. Perhaps due to its importance as the breadbasket of the Empire, the planet's location was kept secret for many years. Only recently was it revealed that Salliche was in the Deep Core, relatively close to the Abregado system.

Salliche is peopled primarily by humans, and (oddly) a small population of wayward Gungan immigrants. Practically nobody of any importance hails from Salliche, unless farmers, tractor mechanics, and grain barons are important in your book.

The planetary government is located in the city of Netassa, where the long-established, aristocratic Harbright family has long influenced affairs.

This planet is also the site of the famous Vaults of Narner, a burial ground that has been repeatedly excavated (some would say "looted") by treasure hunters.

The Rebel Alliance always needs supplies.

I was sent to Droecil to help the local Rebel cell divert some medical supplies from an Imperial stock depot. I contracted a freighter captain named Roark Garnet to haul the cargo to a collection site in the Calus system. Garnet and his co-pilot, Hawk Carrow, own the Dorian Discus, an inconspicuous tramp freighter.

As we were loading the last of the supplies onto the Discus, Imperial stormtroopers burst upon us in the docking bay. The good captain blasted off immediately, of course. We got all the cargo aboard, but there was something he took that wasn't supposed to be loaded. Me. I was just there to shepherd the deal and then return to Salliche. Instead, I found myself the third passenger as the Discus made her trip.

Such is life. My return to my homeworld would be delayed a bit. Things could have been worse.

All told, it was a pretty quiet trip. I got to know Captain Garnet and Hawk. A shortcut was taken by jumping through the Keller Void.

And, that's when the fun began.

"Looks like the Discus dropped us out of hyperspace just before we slammed through an asteroid field," Captain Garnet says. "It's not on any of the charts."

There was a heavy 'thunk', and the ship jerked. Something massive had just hit the hull.

"Great!" Said Garnet. "Why don't you get yourself up into the topside gun and blast any chunk of rock that comes close enough to hit us. I'm shutting down some of the other main systems so Hawk and I can check out the hyperdrive, make sure nothing's wrong."

As I made my way to the turret, I tried to remember what I knew about this part of space.

This is a Planetary Systems roll. The character has 5D in the skill. This is a Moderate task with a 15 difficulty.

I roll and get a total of 14. Missed it by only 1 point!

All I can recall is that Keller's Void is named for the trader who discovered it as a shortcut between the Wroona and Calus systems. Nothing more comes to mind.

I climb up into the gun turret and peer out over the hull into space.

I look for any asteroids heading towards us.

Here, our GM gives us a check to spot anything out of the ordinary. It's a Perception roll. The task is Easy, with a 10+ difficulty. Selnia has a Perception of 3D+1.

I roll and get a total of 13.

Flipping on the tracking computer, I don't see any asteroids from the distant field heading toward the Dorian Discus. So, what was that bump we all felt?

Wait.

There. On the hull! There's something moving near the long range sensor dish!

I squirm in the seat and twist my neck to get a better look out the viewport. It looks humanoid! It's....black scaled...hard to make out. It looks like it is fiddling with a black box that has been attached to the hull near the dish!

I jab my thumb at the inter-ship comm. "Captain Garnet! There's something out there on the ship's hull. I think it's alive!"

"Let me check the sensors..." returns the Captain's voice. "Nope. Nothing on the scope. Everything is clear around the ship. Maybe you are seeing things. Happens if you're not used to space travel."

Well, I know I saw something. I can't see it now, though. But, I know the damn thing is out there.

Yeah. There. Over by the maintenance port. It looks like it is clawing at the components inside! It rips out a clawfull of wires and cables! Then, it turns! IT'S LOOKING RIGHT AT ME!

I press my back flat into the seat, and I check the weapons. Then I use the foot pedals to rotate the weapon towards the creature. I can see its bulbous eyes and warty snout.

Her Starship Gunnery skill is 3D+2. The weapons were not made to fire at targets so close, so this is a Moderate difficulty shot. I need to roll a 15 or better.

I roll and get a total of: 15 on the money!

The blaster cannon flashes and blasts the creature off the exterior of the maintenance port. I smile to myself. Whatever it was, it's gone now.
