aren't there other creatures that have like "sword-hands" or whatnot? the weapon wouldn't be attached to the body - it would be part of the body, like claws or teeth. maybe it would grow an arm that has a sword instead of a hand at the end.
and yes, it could get caught up in a trip attempt, unless it has the ability to "dissolve" the spiked chain as quickly as it created it.
