That's what I do and why I like Shard of the Heart!! I know it sounds like an ad for them but someone else pumped my thread and I still like the book!! :D

I think everyone should make up a few to put in there, even if you put your CHARACTERS in there, other people can use them as NPC's

Since I only find RP notes on about 5-10% of the entries, for me, it's not much use. However, for GM's who primarily need stat blocks, especially for some unusual class/race combos, it's a great resource.

So, do people use these books of NPCs? I really haven't seen many of them but the y few I have I make use of. Mostly for names and character ideas to fit into the world I run. But as a time safer they are so wortth it to me.

Not so far, but I plan to. I have used sample NPCs from Complete Warrior, Call to Duty, Crimson Contracts, Complete Guide to Wererats, and the d20 NPC Wiki. I own Shards of the Heart but have not yet fully read it or added it to my combined reference files where I have individual monsters and NPCs broken down by type and CR and a separate file of over a thousand pages of stat blocks. I'm in the process of reading Everyone Else right now and adding that in.
