For those unfamiliar, he made the illustrations on the original box sets and 1st edition PHB, MM, etc.

After a Pacific Northwest firm bought TSR in the late 1990s and didn't rehire Sutherland, his career crashed. Recently divorced, Sutherland became despondent.

Wizards of the Coast killed David Sutherland.

We've lost a legend.

This news makes me terribly sad. I loved his work. It was a part of my childhood.

Although I unsuccessfully bid on many of the items in that auction, I'm hoping at least I helped raise the bids so he could something on to his daughters. I really, really wanted to win at least a couple of the auction items, but I'm glad that they were out of my price range (meaning they got very high bids).
